“Great Location and Price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 April 2011

My wife and I (both in our mid 60s) stayed at Hostal Alaska for 8 nights in mid February. We did so because we planned to make four day trips out from Madrid during our stay, and the location + price of this hostal cannot be beat. We stayed in Room 7, recommended by another Trip Advisor poster, and we were very satisfied -- this room is very quiet, spacious, and the bathroom was large enough for our needs. There was plenty of heat, no small consideration at that time of year. I had written about our expected 10 am arrival time after an overnight from the States, and staff were waiting to let us into the hostal and the room so that we could rest a bit before plunging into Madrid. Housecleaning was done thoroughly every day. Other than that, we asked for no services from staff, and actually went days without seeing anyone. We are very independent travelers, and this is not a place for people who want a lot of service or support. The hallways have a worn look with some graffiti, and we wondered about our neighbors in the building, but the hostal was fine. The elevator is creaky but gets you up and down. Again, the hostal cannot be beat for location -- access to Madrid's and Renfe's transportation network, and easy walking to all the major museums in the city. At 55 euro a night a great way to do Madrid. Tip: the sign is very small -- the hostal is wedged between two Irish pubs.

Room Tip: Write ahead. Room 7 was large and very quiet.

“A very basic room, but clean, spacious and quiet - would recommend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2011

We booked a superior double room through Hostal Alaska. We actually stayed in a room that seemed to be operated by Hostal Oliver just across the hallway. The room we had wasn't half as nice as the ones shown on the website and in fact we were a bit disappointed on first sight. But, it was spacious, very clean and probably a lot quieter than the more attractive rooms that overlook the (busy) street. Also - the location was excellent, and the room was still good value - so on balance we were pleased and would recommend to anyone looking for cheap and cheerful accommodation in Madrid. Breakfast at the Cafe La Soberbia just down from the hostal was amazing - we went there every morning.

“Very central, close to places of interest, great staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2011

Myself and my girlfriend stayed here for 2 nights, a very good location for visiting and exploring Madrid. The room was comfortable and the staff were very helpful, one lady there in particular was very accommodating and pleasant and really helped us a lot during our stay and I am eternally grateful.
If we end up in Madrid again we'd call here first, absolutely.

“Perfect Place for a Short-Affordable Stay in Madrid with Close Access to Everything”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2011

My spouse and I have been staying at various hostels throughout Europe. We spent the 2nd weekend of January at Hostal Alaska and quite enjoyed it. It is located just off of Sol Station/City center and gives you immediate access to the metro, endless shops, restaurants, and attractions. Plenty of nearby bars with good atmosphere, but the hostel is quiet. The staff were quite friendly (as were everyone else in the city) despite not speaking much Spanish. Our room was clean, with the only problem being that the shower curtain fell off the wall once.

The only real annoying thing about this hostel was that it was on the 4th floor, and that the lighting going up the stairs isn't great. It is supposed to be motion sensored, but the 2nd floor doesn't light up at all and the 3rd floor doesn't light up until you are immediately underneath the sensor. However, despite this we didn't feel unsafe or threatened, just annoyed that we couldn't see very well. Would certainly stay here again.

“Great Location, especially for anyone looking for nightlife”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2010

My boyfriend and I backpacked around Andalusia and wrapped up our trip in Madrid. We're both in our mid 20s/early 30s, and we both loved Hostal Alaska. It looks very sketchy from the outside, and remains sketchy looking until you are on the correct floor. However inside the room is spacious and clean, and the owner lives in a room just outside your entrance. Very kind man, two great dogs, and very helpful. Fantastic location--very close to Plaza Puerta Del Sol, close to great shopping, and surrounded by lively bars and restaurants. We were high enough up in the building to not be too bothered by the noise. 10 all the way around for a budget stay for a young traveler.
