This has been our favorite Madrid bolt-hole for several years, but last week we noticed the quality is slipping. The 24-hour "concierge" who attended the door is gone now, replaced by new sets of keys that are very difficult to use. Automated lights in the hallways plunge you into darkness at the worst possible moment. And the toilets, always noisy, now emit unpleasant odors... and the prices have gone up.

Oh well...

We went for a valentinesweekend to Madrid. Romantic trip, eating, drinking, lingering. Stayed in hostal Santa Isabel. Good location, nice B & B in the centre of town as it was recommended bij people from Madrid we know. Stay was great, payed our lodgings with a Visa card. So far so good, arriving home we discovered that our credit card was not only credited for the hotelcost but also for 460.000 Lebanese Pounds. A real rip off. Please people be ware.

We spent 4 nights at the Hostal Santa Isabel earlier this month. It's very clean, the staff is friendly and helpful (we arrived straight from the airport at 9:30 AM and were allowed to check in a short while later, as soon as a room was ready) and the location is very convenient. My only suggestion would be to request a room with an even number! We were in an odd-numbered room overlooking the street, which was incredibly, unbelievably noisy. On Saturday night the noise didn't wind down until 7 AM Sunday! I think the rooms across the hall overlook an inner courtyard and are probably much quieter. All in all, Hostal Santa Isabel is an incredible value for the money and I definitely recommend it.

The hostal has a very good location (specially if your coming by train to Atocha station, like from Barcelona for example) and is convieniently located at a short walk from the Reina Sofia Museum as well as a subway station.

It is located on the 4th floor of a building, and has lots of shops in front. The value was great (EUR 70 per night for 3) and I definitely enjoyed my stay. Staff was really nice as well, specially the older man that stays in the afternoons!

The room wasn't big for 3 (although when we left, we got to see a bigger and nicer room for 3! maybe more luck next time...) but was perfect for a night's rest. It was spotlessly clean as well!

There were some minor issues, like for example, the walls are paper thin (really, if you are a light sleeper DON'T stay here... though that is not an issue with me) and you can hear almost everything everydobody else is doing! And for some reason, at night, the hostal would smell like cigarettes.... maybe the front desk guy smoked!
