“Treat Yourself”

Been to this hotel three times, and I have loved it. Every time I am pleasantly amazed at the scenery. You can look over and see in the distance the dark, almost intimidating mountains of Africa, and you can see Spain just next door. The hotel itself is to the side of the Island, and overhanging the cliffs, so its like you are on the water. The decor is what you would expect from a 4 star hotel, marble entrance floors, so shiny you can see your face in, and a piano sitting in the lovely restaurant overlooking the spectacular ocean views. Rooms are very confortable, the maid comes at night to tuck you in, and give you a mint I always chose to walk into the town, maybe a few miles away, that way you can witness normal life at its best and at its most normal, washing hanging out stretching overhead from one building to another, lots of cats, and erratic drivers. The town is gorgeous, very english looking, government buildings with guards dressed in their polished uniforms, lots of nice shops, which are all very cheap, all duty free, so smokers and drinkers take advantage. The airport is tiny, with a runway that starts and ends at the edge of the water, a mile long I think. Plenty of excursions, namely Gibraltar Rock, and the hundreds of Barbary Apes who roam around freely, careful if you have food or shiny things, they will grab them off you, they really are cheeky wee monkeys. An American tourist put his new shiny camcorder down for a second, and a monkey ran up, picked it up and threw it over the edge of the cliffs, one stole a multi pack of McCoys crisps from our tour bus and handed them out to his 'pals' and they were sitting eating them up, very funny, and very much like us in all their mannerisms, loved that tour, it is a must. There are supermarkets in the town, and a good taxi service. I used to go everyday to the Salvation Army lunch club, good predictable food, not that I was being tight, I just like to do my bit to keep these places open. I intend to go back to this 'not cheap' hotel. I would not stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: ask for an ocean view, the alternative is the rock view, the higher up, the better

“Check Before You Book!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We have just come back after 5 days at the Caleta which was holding an International Chess Congress for 10 days (24th Jan - 2nd Feb 2012).

What's wrong with that?

Well, the hotel was taken over by these people, most we would say have never experienced a 4* hotel and it showed.

Their whole day revolved around chess!

Nothing wrong with that.....however, neither the management of the hotel or the organising committee were interested in non-chess playing guests.

There were no separate areas in the bar and every table had a chess set on it!

The hotel itself is in an excellent location and has some beautiful sea views from the rooms.

The maid service and cleanliness was excellent.

The Continental Breakfast was overpriced at £9.50p as was the Buffet Evening meal at £18.00p

The bar service was average at best with staff who require training in how to properly dispense draught lager and beers.

If we had paid the asking price of £189.00 per night for a sea view room I would have been very, very disappointed...........even more so if I had paid the Chess Special Rates!

If you are planning a visit, do not be put off by this review, Gibraltar is an ideal mini-break destination, but check the dates of the 2013 International Chess Congress before booking.

Beware.......There's a Junior Event usually in August!!!!

“Don't believe the reviews!!!”

We stayed at the Caleta over the Christmas period. As we spent Christmas with family we only used the hotel for sleeping. I was very impressed by the size and comfort of the room. Lots of storage and a lovely balcony. I have never stayed quite so close to the water which was quite a novelty. The balcony overhangs the water. The views of the morning sunrise are wonderful. We had a couple of stormy days and the crushing waves were quite noisy, so if you re a light sleeper...beware!!
Breakfast was adequate with good service and spectacular views. I would certainly return to the Caleta

“Wedding Reception & Visiting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Caleta is our favourite GIbraltar hotel - great location on the cliff-side, comfortable rooms, we always request a sea-view (alternatives are rock-view).

We had our wedding reception here and a lot of our guests stayed as well. Food is excellent, and there is a nice bar where you can enjoy beer on the patio looking out to sea. It also has some brilliant spots for photos and a nice banqueting hall/restaurant with a spiral staircase where we had our reception.

Not as convenient for town as other hotels as it is in a fishing village on the other side of the rock, but a taxi doesn't take long (c.5-10 mins) and costs about £5. If you have a car, no worries.

Room Tip: Request a sea-view

“Short stay in January.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

The pair of us, just,REALLY ENJOYED OUR STAY!
The beds were very compfy, the view to die for, from the 5th floor.
Despite only 2 out of a group of 4 making the trip( illness ) ,our 2 bed apartment, struck the right cord, on personel space.
As a treat, we ate, at NUNOS,not cheap, but it was my birthday, very good service, and excellent food.
Considering I arrived somewhat stressed out, in dire need of break, we both felt we did not want to leave, after our relaxing stay, if time allows we will be booking this excellent hotel again!!

Room Tip: The higher up you are the better the view, on the seaward side obviously...
