“Water flooded our room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

My husband and I booked the Gran Derby for 4 nights to celebrate my 30th birthday and first impressions were quite good. On arrival we were offered the option to upgrade our room for €10 per night which we accepted. The hotel lobby/foyer was neat and clean, the staff spoke English well, and our room was large and decorated to a high standard. As it was our first time in Barcelona we thought we would walk into the City centre so we could have a look around. The staff said it would take about 30 minutes but it was more like an hour given that there were a lot of sets of traffic lights to cross.

Our first morning at the hotel was a disaster. When my husband removed the plug from the bath the water drained out straight into our bedroom, flooding the floor where I'd placed my handbag and coat. There was obviously a problem with the under-floor plumbing because there wasn't a drop of water in the bathroom. I phoned reception and a man with limited English came to look, then came back with a key to the room next door where we were being moved to. The second room was separated into a sitting room and bedroom, so wasn't as large or attractive as the first. The room contained a leather chaise longue which had a large stain in the middle of the seat. The television in the bedroom had no English-language channels tuned in and the glass shower curtain didn't meet the wall so water sprayed over the floor.

When I went down to speak to reception and to ask for a second room key staff did not apologise or acknowledge any fault of the hotel, so I explained I was very unhappy and asked what would be done about this. I was told the only thing they could do was offer a 50% discount on the first night's stay (although we were still charged the upgrade fee). I requested that my coat be dried by the maid and returned. I then had to spend the day in a rainy, windy Barcelona, without a coat.

We only tried the buffet breakfast on one morning and it was a selection of stale breads, dried-out cured meats and cheeses, plus fruit and cereal. Some warm options were available but we had lost patience with the Gran Derby by this point. Overall I would not recommend this hotel or stay there again. The staff were indifferent and displayed a poor attention to detail which usually sets boutique hotels apart from larger chains. Next time we'll spend a little extra to stay somewhere closer to the centre with better plumbing.

First of all, we would like to thank you for the detailed review you have post at Trip Advisor. It’s very important for us to know the things we’re doing well and the ones we have to improve.

We are really sorry that you feel your stay with us has not been as good as we would like to. It is also a pity that your disappointment didn’t let you try the rest of our services and facilities, I’m positive that if you would have commented your disappointment with the second room at front desk we would have done whatever we could to make you feel comfortable.

We still hope to have the chance to welcome you again in our hotel.

Thank you and best regards,

“Loved the Zebra!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I had a great experience at this boutique Hotel! Gran Derby location is not the best however it has indeed a great decor and charm in a sort of Africa mood with Zebra Carpets (replica)!
The suite room is very comfortable with beautiful ambiance and great bathroom! The pool facilities are also great. Nearby there are local markets and you can treat yourself with some local jamon, cheese and wine! We arrived at 9am and we had to check in only after 14:30 so that was a bit annoying, plus the staff was not that attentive.

“Another hidden gem of the SLH group, location off, but such funky rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

Booked a room through the SLH website again standard room booked and again upgraded to a suite, have to admit off season is the way to book these little small luxury boutique hotels. Room was so funky beds a bit small but mattress and linen excellent quality. Breakfast i would say 6 out of 10, service very good, bathrooms massive with jacuzzi as well. Would most certainly stay there again.

“Surprisingly good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

I was a bit skeptic about the hotel as their low season rates were lower than in much worse "hostales" near Catalunya square. However, I took confidence in their Small Luxury Hotels affiliation and took the plunge. I am really happy that I did, because the Gran Derby turned out to be really nice. It also helped that I was upgraded to a Deluxe room upon my arrival.

The room was clean, modern and good sized, separate lounge area with sofa and table, huge closet and great bathroom with both shower and bath. My best impression however was from the staff, always helpful on any request, especially the lady at breakfast, who kept offering more coffee or new pastries. Speaking of which, breakfast was high quality continental option, with real fresh fruit, great ham and Spanish cheeses (including manchego) and assorted pastries. Best of all, lattes and expressos made to order, not that weak filter coffees in many hotels.

The only downside was that (possibly my fault, as I didn't ask) the room was a bit warm. In fact, it was warmer than usual for this time of the year, so in most places (like the common areas in the hotel), the heater would be on and you'd feel warm. After trying without success to adjust what I thought was the air conditioner, I resorted to opening the windows as I would come back at night. It only worked for a while though, as the room faced the street and you could not bear the noise and sleep with it open.

The good thing about this being out of the beaten track is that this is a quieter location. The local bar and restaurant nearby are neighborhood spots, hence close at a decent hour. The gentlemen clubs nearby are a non issue, as they are closed venues and there is no soliciting outside of any sort. The residual noise during the night was on and off traffic at nearby Sarria avenue, which you probably won't get in a room not facing the street.

All in all, this is a very good hotel a bit way from the main touristy spot of the Catalunya square, which it compensates with lower rates and a wide array of dining options nearby. Get yourself a Barcelona transport card and you'll be fine here. I'd certainly consider coming back, and next time ask how to cool off the room!

Room Tip: The Deluxe room is right as in the website pictures and it's really good. As for a room facing t...
