My husband and I booked the Gran Derby for 4 nights to celebrate my 30th birthday and first impressions were quite good. On arrival we were offered the option to upgrade our room for €10 per night which we accepted. The hotel lobby/foyer was neat and clean, the staff spoke English well, and our room was large and decorated to a high standard. As it was our first time in Barcelona we thought we would walk into the City centre so we could have a look around. The staff said it would take about 30 minutes but it was more like an hour given that there were a lot of sets of traffic lights to cross.
Our first morning at the hotel was a disaster. When my husband removed the plug from the bath the water drained out straight into our bedroom, flooding the floor where I'd placed my handbag and coat. There was obviously a problem with the under-floor plumbing because there wasn't a drop of water in the bathroom. I phoned reception and a man with limited English came to look, then came back with a key to the room next door where we were being moved to. The second room was separated into a sitting room and bedroom, so wasn't as large or attractive as the first. The room contained a leather chaise longue which had a large stain in the middle of the seat. The television in the bedroom had no English-language channels tuned in and the glass shower curtain didn't meet the wall so water sprayed over the floor.
When I went down to speak to reception and to ask for a second room key staff did not apologise or acknowledge any fault of the hotel, so I explained I was very unhappy and asked what would be done about this. I was told the only thing they could do was offer a 50% discount on the first night's stay (although we were still charged the upgrade fee). I requested that my coat be dried by the maid and returned. I then had to spend the day in a rainy, windy Barcelona, without a coat.
We only tried the buffet breakfast on one morning and it was a selection of stale breads, dried-out cured meats and cheeses, plus fruit and cereal. Some warm options were available but we had lost patience with the Gran Derby by this point. Overall I would not recommend this hotel or stay there again. The staff were indifferent and displayed a poor attention to detail which usually sets boutique hotels apart from larger chains. Next time we'll spend a little extra to stay somewhere closer to the centre with better plumbing.
