Of all the great buildings in Barcelona, I would say this is one of my favourites. It lies just up the road from La Sagrada Familia, & is no less monumentally eccentric. Actually it's many buildings - part Gothic cathedral, part Teutonic fortress, part sultan's palace, its roofline is a riot of spires, beehive water towers & gaudily tiled domes, & its flanks are decorated with heraldic symbols & heroic-scale frescoes of the hospital's benefactors. Since June 2009, the ambulances have pulled up in front of a new hospital that's been tacked on at the back, & the majestic old buildings are slowly being transformed into a museum & cultural centre. I highly recommend stopping by the hospital. It's about a block from the Hospital de Sant Pau metro stop.
