“Pleasant stay by the farther beach in town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

While I was hesitant about the hotel with the reviews, esp since we were staying as part of our honeymoon, we ended up having quite a pleasant stay at Hotel San Sebastian! It was just a short walk to Playa Ondaretta -- The last time I was in S Sebastian, I only knew Playa Concha, but this beach was just as nice, and on the days we didn't stay on that beach, we just had a nice walk or bike ride across Playa Concha to old town (about 20-30 min). There are also quite a few tapas/pintxo bars, stores/supermarket, ATM, etc. across the street - while it doesn't have the variety of Old Town, it definitely wasn't too quiet. I would agree with other reviewers that it wasn't quite a 4star hotel - it didn't have any sort of luxurious feel given the almost 200euro/night we paid (though we were there during the Intl Film Festival so prices were probably marked up) - but it was comfortable, with good air conditioning, Internet and service....so that, with the close proximity to the beach, was more than we could ask for!
Tip: If you don't feel like tapas, go to the left of the beach Playa Ondaretta for a nice restaurant & cafe Branka. Don't eat at the cafe at the beach itself - Prices posted are deceiving (Coca Cola Light was almost 5 euros, when the machine outside was < 2 euros)!

“Full of school kids on a football holiday”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2010

Stayed for 3 days of relaxing by the beach before riding home. Checked in about 10pm and enquired where the restaurant was only to be told it was shut and we would be unlikely to find anywhere open on this side of the town. There was a bar but no food (tapas had all gone by that time). There was a coffee shop attached to the hotel which was closing and we persuaded them to sell us a couple of coffees and cake, to take up to our room. Hotel only a short walk from the lovely beach but a good 40 mins away from the more lively old town although walk was along the promenade so was not unpleasant at a relaxed pace. There appeared to be a football coaching school nearby, hence the hotel was full of 10-16 year olds on school trips from all over Europe, none of which seemed to be properly supervised and spent most of the evening/early morning running up and down the corridors playing football and shouting to their mates. I complained to reception who basically shrugged their shoulders, saying "it's World Cup, what do you expect?". Actually, a decent night's sleep the night before I leave early to go home is what I expect. Suggestion to Manager - Put all the kids rooms together and leave a couple of floors for your other "holidaying" guests.

“DO NOT STAY HERE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

I would not recommend anyone to stay here - the staff are BEYOND rude and were EXTREMELY unhelpful, definitely not the service expected from a 4 star hotel.
Upon check-in we were told that our booking could not be found and that the hotel was full - we were basically told that there was nothing that could be done and that it was 'not their problem'. I was served by a gentleman called Angel and spoke with a manager whose name I was not given. After waiting 45 minutes in the hotel lobby we were then told our booking was found but had been cancelled and that again was 'not their problem'. Although it ended up being a minor misunderstanding and our booking was eventually found, we were made to wait nearly an hour with no offer of help to find alternate accommodation or even the use of a phone. Service such as this from a 4 star hotel is unheard of and a downright embarrassment to your establishment.
The day prior to check out we asked Angel if he could find out how much a taxi for 4 adults and 4 suitcases would cost to take to Bilbao Airport for the following morning as we had a flight at 11am and were deciding whether it was feasible to catch a taxi or to get the train. We were told we were to get 1 taxi for 4 adults and 4 suitcases for the cost of 140 euros. We agreed this would be suitable and asked if we needed to book. We were told as long as we notified reception 15 minutes prior to leaving that the taxi would be available, however the following morning this was not the case. We had the most unfortunate experience of being served by a woman called Fani who was not only rude but lied to us. Firstly she told us we could not get 1 taxi and that we needed to take 2 and after we told her we had spoken to Angel the day before and he had confirmed with the cab company that 1 would be sufficient we were then told that there was only 1 large cab in the town and that the driver was off work for the day. After asking if she could call another company we were told that there wasn't one. This was not the case as we discovered when we made our way to the taxi rank around the corner and after 2 minutes of waiting an 8-seater taxi pulled up who informed us there are 2 taxi companies in town and 14 of these sized taxis. I requested several times to speak to the manager who was Sr. Ezquerro, and on each occasion I was informed that at 9:20am he was still not at the hotel and wouldn't be for another hour. I have stayed at many hotels all over the world ranging from 1 to 5 stars and never have I encountered such rudeness and unwillingness to help from a staff member. Each time I was told it was 'not their problem' - Servce such as this is a DISGRACE

“Very Nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

We completely agree with the nice reviews--we found this hotel to be very clean, very comfortable, and very conveniently located. The beach just up the street is spectacular--just be sure to bring a towel, as it's 12 euro to rent one for the day--and the walk to the city center along the boardwalk is just enough to work up an appetite for the fabulous tapas restaurants and to walk them off on the return trip.

“Well Placed in a lovely City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

Just back from spending a couple of days here. The hotel is clean and efficient. Breakfast is served in the basement and is the typical Spanish Buffet style with cold meats, cheeses and numerous breads. You can also have sausage, Bacon and such as well as fruit and pastry.

The rooms are a fair sized, with air conditioning and bath with shower, and are all clean and well maintained.

The hotel is located about 3 mins walk from one end of the spectacular beach and about 30 mins very plesant stroll into the old town. We had Tapas one evening behind the Cathedral sitting on the street, in a area of bars and restaraunts, and the Tapas was fantastic.

Its a city that will surprise you, and this hotel is ideally placed to let you enjoy it.

I hope to be back here soon.
