“Basic rooms but perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

Pension Loinaz is in the heart of the old town - you couldn't ask for a better location in terms of access to the tapas bars, the beach and the other sights of San Sebastian. As a consequence though, it can be a little noisy at night (but once you close the windows it's not too bad). The rooms were basic but very clean, comfortable and decently sized. The lady that we initially dealt with didn't speak very good English, but we were all able to get our messages across in the end! The other owner spoke good English and was there on the day that we paid our account. Overall great value and a very enjoyable stay.

“Great location, clean and very friendly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

Facilities here were very clean and rooms were well presented, and our host Jose was extremely helpful and very friendly. His English was excellent and he gave a great recommendation for a memorable dinner at a Cider House a short taxi trip away. His wife did a load of washing for us for 10 euro and when we came back we found all our clothes washed, dried and folded for us in record time! There were lots of stairs but this wasn't a problem for us. The pension is located in the old town with a supermarket opposite and great access to cafes and bars.

Room Tip: Bathrooms are shared with others on the floor.

“Unbeatable location at a great price, can get noisy though”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

The Pension Loinaz is a "Mum and Dad" style hostel (the owners have partitioned off part of their house) with around 6 private rooms. It's an an absolutely unbeatable location, right above all the shops and amazing tapas bars in old town. The hostel is also close to beaches and is about 15 mins easy walk from the train station. The hostel rooms and bathrooms were always immaculately clean, the owners actually cleaned the bathrooms at least 3 times per day.

The amazing location does come at a price, we had trouble sleeping some nights because of the street noise form below. However for us the location was so good it easily negated the lack of sleep. The WiFi can get sketchy in some of the end rooms, the rooms closest to the owners door has the best WiFi reception.

The owners were very nice to us during our stay. They waived a certain charge form our bill explaining "that's how we would like to be treated if we were visiting your country", it was unexpected! It should be mentioned that the owners do expect a certain level of respect, it is their home after all. When we arrived they explained that they expect us to try and keep the bathroom clean, by hanging up the bathmat etc. Another guest told me he got into trouble with the owner for leaving a trail of wet footprints from the bathroom to his room. We just showed the owners normal respect and courtesy and had no issues whatsoever.

“Great location, wonderful hosts, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

We stayed at Pension Lionaz for three nights and found it to be great value. Right in the centre of old town San Sebastian, it was moments away from all the sights and more bars and restaurants than we could choose from! The rooms was spacious, clean and well decorated and the owners a pleasure to deal with - I don't think they could have been more helpful.

Our room overlooked one of the little streets of San Sebastian. We arrived on the day of a major football game for the region (which the local team one) which meant that the locals were out partying literally all night. We got absolutely not sleep on that night, but slept very well on the other nights! If you're a light sleeper, perhaps ask for a room that doesn't face the street, or try not to stay when there's a football match scheduled!

Note that cars aren't able to drive into the old town. We arrived at the local bus station, about half an hour's walk away from the hotel, but taxi drivers refused to take us. So we walked. When we arrived, we discovered that cars can in fact drive to within two streets of the hotel (to a street called Boulevard). So, if a taxi driver tried to deny you service on the basis of the hotel's location, insist that they drive you to Boulevard. It will save you a very long walk...

Room Tip: Get a room that doesn't face the street.

“Basic and good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

We stayed here during our Honeymoon this summer and had a nice stay. Great location in the middle of the old part of San Sebastian, easy access to get to the beach and just wander around the pedestrian-only streets. Down the block from an awesome gelateria. Free internet would have been nice, but there is a computer in the place that you pay to use per minute. There is a better internet cafe 10 feet away across the street too.
