“very good value for money and excellent service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2010

Okay, this hotel is about 2km outside the centre of touristy Triberg, and as such, is a nice quiet place to retreat to after a days walking / sightseeing / souvenir shopping etc.
The hotel is very old fashioned, which we really liked. Decor from the 1960s or 1970s. Henry and his wife run the hotel, and are extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfasts fill you up, and if you have dinner there, the food is of a very good quality with locally sourced ingredients.
We paid 74 euros for the room, breakfast, tourist taxes inclusive. The room was very large, although the bathroom very small. Everything was clean, and although the room was on the main road, it was quiet at night (plenty of lorries pass during the day, but virtually no noise after dark). Room service was daily, although the towels werent up to much (not very towelly, if you know what I mean!).
The owner also picked us up from the station, and gave us a quick tour of the local area on the way back to the hotel, so we knew where things were, which was very decent of him.

So the pros -
- very nice cosy hotel
- the owners very attentive and helpful, and speak good English.
- prices very comparable with other hotels
- excellent value for money
- plenty of food for breakfast, and the evening menu is very good
- quiet and relaxed placed to stay
- you get a free travelcard (which I think might be standard for hotels in the Black Forest, not entirely sure - either way, it's really useful)

Cons -
- couple of km outside Triberg, and buses are once an hour so if you havent got a car, then some planning is required when going places. Didnt worry us, but might bother some
- some rooms on the main road, although looks as though others would face the back of the hotel. Again, not something that bothered us, but if you fancy a nap during the day, then there could be noise from the road.
- small bathroom, and probably best to bring your own towels.

Overall - a smashing place with helpful owners that is very good value for money, and just some minor drawbacks to consider. We'd certainly recommend it.

“Just O.K if there is no where else”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2010

It is a throw back of the 60's & 70's in style and decor, very dark and gloomy. It has no lounge to sit in to have a drink in the evening when it is too cold to sit out on terraces. The rooms all vary , some have been modernised, so I had been told, but all had sinks in the rooms (not in Bathrooms) Our room was at the back, nice and quiet, beds and linen were O.k and changed every day. The Bathroom had no window, and little ventilation and shower curtain had seen better days.
Good Breakfast was provided, but evening meal was disappointing ( I suspect that was not typical more catered for english guests)
Only german channel T.V
The positives , the staff were very helpful and polite and there is wifi available.
Probab.ly would not stay again

“Terrible - Never again, especially at Christmas!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2009

We arrived around midnight on Tuesday/Wednesday after an epic 22 hour journey. The hotel owner had been advised that we would be late. There was no welcome and nowhere to get a drink of any kind. We were handed our room keys, and found there were no drink facilities in the room - unless you wanted a glass of tap water! On Christmas Eve we went out on a coach trip, which was fortunate because there was absolutely nothing to do and the hotel had no lounge. After dinner the only entertainment was a quiz which was put on by our coach driver - n0 entertainment of any kind was put on by the hotel owners. We were told that we should leave the dining room at 10.30 because the staff needed to go off to celebrate with their families, so there was nothing else to do but go to bed. On Christmas Day we were told that we had to have lunch at 11am because the staff would be busy later on entertaining people from the village. We were taken on a coach trip and told that we should not return before 5pm. The ONLY entertainment provided for the whole stay were two quizzes put on by our coach driver. In all it was the worst Christmas ever! We travelled with Newmarket Coach Tours who obviously had not done their homework, or had chosen the cheapest accommodation possible Never Again!

“Hotel Roemischer Kaiser”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2007

We had a confirmed reservation via email from the manager, but upon our arrival, we were told the hotel was closed. When I produced my email confirmation, their story changed and we were then told that a tour bus came in and they sold all the rooms. Not sure what the real story was, but in any event, I would not recommend staying at this hotel. It was on a main highway and it appeared that it would have been very noisy anyway.

“Good Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2007

This hotel is situated on a main road, a short distance outside the tourist trap that is Triberg. It has parking.

I wouldn't particularly recommend it for the rooms: ours was very old and dark with a view of a grass bank outside the window. However, the food was excellent and extremely good value.

I would stay there again myself, but would hesitate to recommend it as it is in need of a bit of an update. Not for the tourist who expects modern facilities, but if you don't mind a rather dark and old-fashioned look, it is inexpensive and value for money.

  • Liked — The food
  • Disliked — The view from the bedroom window.
