“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Our room was spacious, clean and overlooked the Cathedral square. The reception staff was helpful and courteous. The best thing about this hotel for us was the central location. We were a short walk from restaurants, shopping, and the Schlossberg trail.

“Fully recommand - charming hotel!”

Really nice hotel! Amazing location (impossible to find a better location)! Lovely, spacious and very clean room. But the best is the restaurant! Great atmosphere and delicious traditionnal food. Service is perfect. We simply LOVED that small, charming hotel. Worth noting that our room was right in front of the cathedral, ...so bells ringing at 7am. I really liked it and really enjoyed hearing bells, but worth knowing.

“Great location”

It is a little hard to do this hotel justice after spending a week in the most perfect hotel imaginable in a lake in Italy but it is only fair to the Hotel Oberkirch to try.

We arrived in Freiburg after almost a whole day's journey by train from Italy. We were a bit confused by the address since the hotel reception appears to be in a side street and not in the Muensterplatz as stated on my printout. We ended up in the cosy-looking restaurant where a helpful lady showed us the way around the back to the main reception.

We were given a room on the first floor around the back of the hotel, so not overlooking the Muensterplatz, which I was glad of as I had already read about the bells and didn't really want to be kept up all night. This didn't really turn out to be too much of a problem in the end, and the free earplugs left on the bedside tables were not needed as although we could hear the bells, they weren't especially dominating.

For the rest of the room, there were some good things, and some bad things.

Good:

The room was clean. We had a plate of fresh fruit and some cute little cookies on the pillows which was a nice touch. We also had a free bottle of water although it was fizzy and neither of us like sparkling water! Still, it was nice that it was there. There was a room safe which is always a plus. The bathroom was lovely and modern, and the shower had nice hot water at a good pressure. Bathrobes were also provided!
Breakfast was included and was more than adequate. I rather enjoyed my boiled egg every morning!

Not so good:

The room was a tiny bit cramped, mostly dominated by the large austrian-style double bed. The pillows were awful and so soft they offered no support at all. The mattress was the complete opposite and I woke up with a slight backache on both days.
The room was a little old-fashioned for my own taste but this was what I expected so not really a problem.
Our room also overlooked a courtyard which also seemed to be the smoking spot so whenever we had the windows open, we'd get a roomful of cigarette smoke.
The shower leaked something chronic - we managed to soak through 3 bathmats by the time we'd both had a shower. Think it had something to do with the inefficient doors.
The wifi didn't work in our room so we had to wander around the hallway until we found a signal. It was free though, so can't complain too much about that!

Overall, the hotel was good for what we needed, a central place to stay with reasonable facilities. We didn't find it amazing, although after staying in a number of other hotels in/around Freiburg during the rest of our stay, it was certainly above par.. And the location in the charming old town is unbeatable.

“Wonderful hotel, wonderful staff, wonderful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

Hotel Oberkirch is located on the Muensterplatz in the heart of Freiburg's old town. My room was in the hotel's "annex," just a two-minute walk from the main hotel. It was clean, tidy and equipped with a lift. The staff was extremely welcoming and my single room was spacious, tastefully decorated, had a flat screen TV with an English-language news channel and came with a welcoming gift of fruit and a bottle of water. The shower had plenty of hot water and water pressure was good. There was a complimentary travel-size shampoo-and-shower soap along with a small cake of hand soap. The breakfast buffet, included in the price of the room, was more than adequate, with variious kinds of breads, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit juices, joghurts and cereals offered. In addition, the staff offered to cook an egg for you. It was a treat to sit outside in the evening at one of the hotel's tables facing the towering Gothic St. Martin church and sip a glass of wine and people-watch. On the downside, as with many older European hotels, there was no air conditioning, so my room was hot, even with the windows open.

“Be aware of the bells !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

The room we were given overlooked the square and the cathedral and all looked and seemed fine for a short while until ..... the bells began to ring ! The noise went on all night on the quarter hour until the chime and it was really difficult to sleep. I found the earplugs in the drawer the following morning ! Beautiful location, lovely hotel but very noisy.
