“Pleasant stay in lovely area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

We were two couples visiting Provence for a couple of nights. We found this hotel online and it looked nice and was reasonably priced. We were not disappointed.
Our two rooms were on different floors. The first floor room had fully shuttered doors onto the patio. My room was upstairs. It appeared to have been more recently renovated and was air conditioned while the downstairs room was not. Since I prefer a cool room, I was happy to be in the ac but the other couple was equally content with the downstairs room. However, should you want to open your shutters, be aware that the downstairs rooms face tables on the patio so you may not have the same privacy that the upstairs rooms afford.
Rooms are simply furnished and clean. The bathroom was sparkling clean.

There is a very inviting pool. Breakfast cost 8 euros and was good. The hotel is a short walk from the center of St. Remy so the location is great. It is in its own walled-in compound.
We found the staff to be very pleasant. Our only complaints would be that the towels were a bit worn and thin and that the hot water wasn't always immediately available.
But, for the price and convenience, this is a fine place to stay.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have ac

“I have never been treated more rudely”

We were coming into town late having driven all day from the Dordogne, tired and had reservations at a B&B in the nearby country side for our first night in the area. We had thought of also staying at the Van Gogh because of the name as we are artists. We stopped at the hotel to ask directions and get some information and the woman at the front desk was rude and practically pushed us out the door. She would in no way help us. I even speak some French. It was the worst experience we had in 3 weeks of traveling around France. It left us so disappointed, discouraged and bummed out and with the most negative impression. It was puzzling... Fortunately we met other people that helped us out. A very nice woman made a call for us to our B&B at a nearby real estate office. I had to write and warn other people. We did not wind up staying here and I never will on return trips to the area.

Delightful and charming hotel with a lovely pool. All spotlessly clean. Smiling, helpful staff.
Accommodated our tandem bike in secured outhouse. Breakfast available to be had outside or inside. Super hot water, great plumbing. Wi fi a bonus. Would recommend !

“Underrated gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2010

I'm quite surprised by the average reviews for this hotel - we were very happy there for two nights.

Our double room was in the annex, so we had plenty of privacy, peace and quiet. The decor in the room was a bit naff but it was clean and tidy. And the hotel itself has a modern, comfortable lounge and bar area.

You're a five minute walk from the centre of St Remy - great location - and the free parking is very handy too. But the very best thing about this hotel is the swimming pool. It's big, well-maintained, and there's stacks of loungers and seats. Plus you can pop to the bar if you fancy a poolside drink (which is pretty reasonable too).

We didn't have much to do with the staff, but I didn't find them unfriendly as some have complained. In fact, they were pretty amenable. If I had to criticise anything it would be that there free wifi didn't work, but that's literally it.

“Lovely rooms, shame about the staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2009

We stayed at the Hotel van Gogh as part of a 7-day trip around Provence. On the whole the hotel is fine...the pool was a welcome addition as many of the other 2 stars we had stayed at didn't have one, and the room was pleasant with the added bonus of air conditioning.

What did put a sour note to our short stay though was one of the staff members. As the hotel doesn't serve lunch we had popped into town to grab some drinks and a baguette and were very quietly eating this by the pool, when we were accosted by a member of the staff. Rather than politely communicating the hotel's policy of not eating outside (we later found out this is communicated in french on a note in a very dark corner of the landing) - he literally screamed for about 5 minutes.

Granted we weren't doing the right thing, however there really was no excuse for his behaviour. Added to this was a pretty disappointing breakfast (very stale croissants) making this the worst hotel in our holiday. Shame, as with the pool and nice room it could have been one of the best.

One last note - agree with the other users - ensure your room is upstairs as the ground floor rooms open directlly onto the pool/terrace.
