Spouse and I stayed at La Vierge Noire for one night in June 2006. Although the address includes "Ste. Maxime" the hotel is actually several kilometers outside town and would be very inconvenient for anyone without a car. The grounds are pleasant if somewhat untended. The swimming pool looked inviting and there is a beach right across the road. Parking is free in a large gated lot. The hostess was very pleasant. The main problem we had is that while the hotel seemed clean, there was a strong damp musty smell that pervaded our room and the public areas as well. We opened the window and doors to balcony but that did not help much. Anyone with mold or mildew allergies would have an uncomfortable time here. The mattress was old and not very comfortable. The hostess indicated that she had given us a better room (room #1) than we had reserved because the hotel was not busy. The regular rate for the room was something like 114 Euros!!! That is way too much for that room even in an expensive area of France. Continental breakfast (extra charge - not included in room rate) was mediocre. Our impression is that the hotel is a family-owned place struggling to stay in business and saddled with an old building. On the whole, while this is by no means the worst European hotel we've stayed at, we would try another hotel rather than returning to La Vierge Noire.
