“Great Location, interesting terrain.”

The Airotel Chanterclerc is fairly easy to find and is sign posted on the roundabouts and slip roads coming off the A8 auto-route to the south. The site is set over a series of terraces inside a pine forest, we pitched our tent on the uppermost terrace offering fantastic views of the Provençal mountains to the north. The ground was hard and baked, so strong steel tent pegs worked best. Some of the pathways and concrete steps across the site and up through patches of tress were overgrown and in need of renovation.
The forest location was a great place to relax, the site was not particularly busy in late September so offered us a good deal of peace and quiet. Also being only 20 minutes walk from central Aix-en-Provence, it provided a great base for day trips to the city.
The wash block facilities were average, all the usual amenities were present laundry washing/drying etc and the toilets were in a good state of cleanliness and hygiene. However the showers were old with tiles coming away from the walls, staining on the sinks, minor clogging in the drains.
Each plot receives a free 15 minute session on the wi-fi connection per visit, after the 15 minutes is up, then you pay in increments depending on how long access is required.
The staff were helpful and polite, the reception has maps of Aix-En-Provence and details of various day trips and attractions in the local area.
In the evenings the on-site restaurant served all the usual French convenience dishes, salads, steak, chicken and chips, pizza's and pasta's, it was slightly overpriced considering this was essentially no more than pub grub however the the portions were a healthy size.
If you prefer to self-cater then the nearest shops were 5 minutes walk from site on the Ave, Andre Magnan set between two apartment blocks around a square, shops included a newsagents, grocery, baker, butchers and pharmacy. The bakers sells very tasty bread and croissants, the site shop was not open during our visit so the bakers was our only option.

“A little noisy, but worth the stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2008

We stayed for 4 nights in a tent mid Oct 2008. The choice was forced because no other camping grounds in the area appear to be open that time of the year.

The staff were pleasant and helpful; English was no problem. The sanitation facilities were clean (although I was surprised to see a camper leave the showers with her wet dog). They were cleaned each morning. The shower heads were not perfect, but adequate.
The is a separate dish washing and laundry room in each sanitation block. As we left we saw a sign to a laundry (laverie) which probably had washing machines.

The camp was perhaps 20% occupied. There appeared to be a few 'permanents' which can (and did present some problems). Most of the campers near us stayed for a few days with their camper/RV van. It seemed it was a tight squeeze through the lanes for a few of them.

Each site is screened somewhat (some better than others). Not much grass on the ground. There is lots of shade from the trees, and we saw plenty of birds and a few squirrels.

The site is high on a hill above Aix and the background sound of the freeway/motorway is constantly present. Perhaps the sites nearer to the pool are quieter; we were on pitch 148.
The pool and restaurant were closed. The daily temperature whilst we were there was above 20, but it got quite cool in the night.

Summary: would not be my first choice in future. But if you want to be near the city it would be good.

“Well-run, quite pleasant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2005

Having camped there for 4 nights in early October ´05 I must say that the site was well-run with a friendly reception & very clean bathrooms. The site is terraced with a lot of greenery. It was surprisingly cold at night, though, down to 5 degrees Celsius. There was plenty of space, quiet and only few guests; whether it is just as pleasant during the high-season, I don´t know. Fees were slightly on the expensive side, about 11,30 Euros for one person and a small tent. There is a supermarket on a square only 5 mins away. For public transport, use bus 3 (or was it 5 ??) from the Mirabeau, close to the bus and train stations, or walk to the centre, about 30-35 mins. The town´s alternative camp site is very near by on the same main road & you might want to compare the two. It is open all year. Nice hot showers, no shop or café. Located in the eastern outskirts at Val André.
