We discovered this hotel quite by accident; the hotel isn't much to look at but it is in the centre of town, close to secure indoor parking garage that lets you park overnight for about 7 Euros. La Rochelle is a very interesting town, close to Ile de Re, which takes a whole day to tour, so we stayed at the hotel for two nights. Do not take breakfast at the hotel, it will save you 8 Euros per person and you can just go across the street to a little pastry/coffee shop and get much better coffee and pastry/croissant at a lower price. Although we were disappointed when we first saw the hotel, we were really pleased with the comfort of the beds, the cleanliness, and the friendly and helpful staff. It is excellent value for money at 65 Euros per night.

As other reviews have noted (but I had missed them before I booked the hotel), there is no elevator -- and the top floor rooms are a bit of a trek with luggage. There is also no air conditioning -- which is something not wholly unexpected -- but the hotel doesn't even have fans to place in the rooms during the warmer days of the year (somewhat cruelly, the reading lights mounted on the walls are made to look like fans). And if they did, there would be no place to plug them in other than the outlet for the television (or in the bathroom).

On the positive side, the location is terrific (within one block of the Place Verdun, and one block from the market). And the hotel staff was very nice.

In all, fair value for the price.

Booked by telephone in morning and on arrival, that evening, I was given a second floor room overlooking the inner court. There was no airconditioning, which might be a problem in July and August, and there is no lift.
Room and bathroom were satisfactory and what one would expect from a two star hotel in this region.

The hotel is right in the centre of the old city but still only a hundred metres or so from the bus station, the cathedral of St Louis and an underground car park - all in Place de Verdun. Walk down the street outside the hotel for 150 metres in the other direction and you come to the covered market. Two museums, the hotel de ville and the "trade mark" towers are all within an easy stroll. It's only a little further to the tourist office, the nautical museum (on board ship) and the railway station, with much to see along the way.

There is a huge choice of places to eat and drink in the vivcinity.

We stayed 4 nights at the Hotel De Paris during March '08. The hotel was recommended to us by a local student that we were coming to visit. It was a nice, friendly, family owned hotel. We had a fine room that overlooked the street. The room was clean and basic--not fancy. Fine for us.

It was a bit noisy some evening with people and cars driving on the cobblestone street, but the ability to watch the street scene made up for that. They apparently have some quieter rooms facing a garden. The room was clean and had daily maid service. The bathroom was quite spacious and the shower had plenty of hot water. The hotel had numerous shops and restaurants within a 10 minute walk from it, and the staff speaks English and was very friendly and helpful. There is a bus station a block away that has buses that can take to to the Ile de Re, a worthwhile trip to the island. The Cafe de Arts just down the block was great for breakfast or lunch. Didn't try it for dinner. All in all, a great visit, and we'd recommend staying at this hotel.
