“The facilities better than the location”

Strange feel about this campsite which is besides train track and very close to landfill site. The nearest beach is surrounded by empty boarded and abandoned houses (no idea what happened here)!!! The pool and tennis courts are above average but unless your into laying and playing by the poolside not a site to spend more than a couple of days at.
reasonable out of season rates with the appropriate camping card. Perfect to use as a stop-over site.

“'200M from the beach' - laughable!”

We are a family of 5 and we rented a 3 bedroom mobile-home last week for 950 euro.
I had specifically wanted easy access to the beach but was very disappointed that the railway line separates the site from the beach. We walked once but it's along a fairly dangerous busy road past a disused camp-site that appears to be being demolished. . Have a look at Google Earth if location is important to you as Les Sables website is (deliberately?) vague. There is no-way I would have booked if I new the railway was so close.

Noise levels at night were, generally, ATROCIOUS and we left a day early as our last night we were kept awake until 6am by a nearby party. (the pitches are quite small). When I complained to reception they told me that the security guard 'wasn't on duty' that night which doesn't help when your 2 teen daughters haven't slept properly!!
On a positive note the swimming pool complex was very good and the on-site resto good value. My kids enjoyed it but noisy neighbours caused them considerable grief.

If you like staying-up drinking until the early hours then fine but we won't be going back to Les Sables and I think their website could be considered by some to be misleading re. location and I have stayed in other sites where security ask people to 'keep the noise down' after midnight.....

“Good site in the wrong location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

Three families travelled together (3 kids each) for a two week holiday.
The accommodation was basic but had a very good balcony, half of which was covered. The swimming pool was one of the best I have seen with muliple areas for all sizes and very good slides. The kids loved it.
The restaurant and bar was above average with very nice staff.
Where is fell down wa the location, there is a beach 200 yards away, however it is very muddy and looks dirty. The surrounding area looks deserted and run down, with little to offer. We found ourselves travelling about 40 minutes to get a decent beach (there are too local Islands with great beaches).
If I was going back to the area I would try one of the Islands, which have multiple camping sites although the pools don't look half as good.

“A Good Option for this area in France”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2010

PAYMENT: It's not stated on their website, but Les Sables do accept Visa so would strongly advise anyone to avail of this. I had originally sent a deposit via Bank Giro and the French postal system lost it. It cost me 67 euros to redeem the Giro.
FOOD: We arrived in early September and the bar / restaraunt were non - existent for our 2 week stay, so depend on the fact that you will be eating out / self catering if staying at that time of year. Do not rely on the onsite shop. And whatever you do, do not go to the nearby Bar at Le Plage (The beach) which is a rip-off and staffed by a harpie. We managed without a car, as Carrefour is a 15 minute walk through fields and we stocked up there regularly. If you have children, a car might be necessary.
STAFF: Stephanie on reception was of great assistance.
MOBILE HOME: Spacewise, its a good idea to get a home with the decking area. The sites are spaced quite well apart. We had one obnoxious individual beside us but this was the exception. Otherwise all other campers were very polite and respectful.
FACILITIES: The swimming pools and water area are fantastic, the real high point of this site and in September, these areas are very quiet except for Saturdays. This also means no lifeguard off season if this is a concern for you. An exceptionally clean site & the washing machines worked perfectly and were reasonable.
ACCESS: An excellent public transport system through La Rochelle & Aytre means you can manage without a car (but you must enjoy walking as the campsite is a good 25 minutes to train / bus station). Nothing really to see in Aytre but La Rochelle is spell binding. If sightseeing, get a weekly travel pass from the Tourist Office and you can access all aspects of the city. Passes to the museums / aquarium are also cheaper if you purchase at the same time from the Tourist Office.
SUMMARY: Camping Les Sables is a perfect family option and a great base to use for travelling in this area of France. Would like to return in a few years.

“Camping les Sables”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2009

Spent 1 week at this campsite in June in a lovely 3 bedroom chalet, with a 4 year old. First time ever at a campsite anywhere, and I have to say I was very impressed. Plenty to do as long as you're into water & pools, with a good variety of pools from toddler pools to slides, jacuzzi's and even a covered pool in case of bad weather. Chalet was spotless and very well equipped, with a nice terrace for outside dining. Good washing facilities, machines, showers etc. and playgrounds dotted all over.
No need for a car as it's about €30 in a taxi from the airport and only 200 yds from the beach. 2 train stations are 15-20mins walk from the camp, for the 6 min trip into the lovely town of La Rochelle, and theres a huge supermarket and shopping centre a 20 min walk away. I look forward to going back same time next year.
Some words of warning though. Most of June is low season and the only restaurant/bar only opens at the weekends, when the camp gets very busy. Lastly, ensure your accomodation is left spotlessly clean when you're checking out otherwise you will be looking at a large fine (we were charged €30, but I know others who had to pay €60, and we left ours quite clean!)
Nevertheless highly recommended.
