“Never got as far as booking - terrible”

Simple this - called this morning to book a room for two of us in the Chataeu. My french is poor, for which I apologised. Woman said nobody spoke English there. I asked if I could try to book the room and she said something in French and slammed the phone down.
We were looking for a high-end stay at the end of a touring trip. This clearly isn't it.

“Steeped in history with Old World charm and elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

Steeped in history with Old World charm and elegance, le Coq Hardi was the "surprise find" of our recent two-week stay in France. My wife and I traveled to Verdun to visit a family grave in the Meuse-Argonne American Military Cemetery in nearby Romagne as well as to tour the Verdun battlefields. My wife had stumbled on le Coq Hardi in a book she had read on the Battle of Verdun. Evidently, it was a popular spot for French officers to converse and carouse in 1916. Well, today it is just as refreshing. Le Coq Hardi is a great place to relax and dine, and is centrally located adjacent to the historic Porte Chaussee and the Meuse River. The staff was helpful, going out of their way to help two non-French speaking American travelers. The two of us were so taken with the hotel and its environs that we are planning to return next fall.

“A pleasant surprise”

We booked before reading the reviews, so when we did check the hotel out on Trip adviser were a bit worried. What we found was a well presented traditional hotel in what must be the best location of any in Verdun. It is an old building so of course the floors squeaked, but public areas are full of well polished wooden beams and thick carpets. This is no boutique hotel with the latest bathroom fittings but we found it to be a good quality hotel offering good service in a somewhat old fahioned but charming style. Our room had twin antique beds with comfortable mattresses and some of the best lighting we had on our trip through France. Thee was a sliding door to our amazing 1950s style bathroom; bath was a bit worn but perfectly clean. The dining room was like stepping back to the 19th century - very plush and glamorous, first class service and the food was good. and reasonably priced There is also a modern Bistro with a nice terrace on the street where we had lunch - which was fine. No parking which is a nuisance but not unusual in a historic town centre. We parked about 5 mins away (the car park is huge so you could easily end up 15mins away on a bad day) but we were next to the police station so felt the car was safe and had no problems. Free Wi-Fi in rooms which worked well. Shame some bad service a few years back gives a poor impression. We thoroughly enjoyed out stay.

“Charming hotel with character in an excellent location and helpfull staff.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2010

Stayed for 2 nights in late Aug 2010 with wife and four friends. We all found the hotel very charming with great character and features, yes this included squeaky floor boards but thats what you expect from an old building. The rooms were perfectly adequate with good decor and comfy beds, the bathroom had large double sink, toilet, bidet and a bath with a hand held shower, pity the shower facility had no wall holder and shower curtain as that would have finished the facilities off well for us, and perhaps the toilet door could have closed properly but never mind. We did I have to say notice quite a smell on one occasion from our friends bathroom, that was not perhaps so nice especially for them. The restaurant appeared to be quite expensive, although they did offer some special priced deals, although the lack of people eating did take us out along the riverside to eat where there was enough choice. Overall it was pleasant enough in comparison although perhaps slightly overpriced, but then the location overlooking the river but still by the shops probably made up for that, all in all we would all probably stay there again but perhaps negotiate the price down a little.

Quaint hotel in the town centre right by the canal. Excellent staff, lovely rooms and FANTASTIC restaurant. Hotel and restaurant is pricey but we thought it was worth it!
