“An absolute delight to stay here”

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights as part of an 8 week holiday through Europe, UK and Ireland. We chose this hotel based on its location, facilities and Tripadvisor reviews.

We arrived here having driven from Nimes. Finding the hotel was straight forward as it is located just outside the medieval town. The hotel is a delight, with a lovely garden and reception area where you can sit and have an evening drink or meal whilst looking out at the castle. Similarly the rooms were well furnished and of an excellent standard. The hotel also has a pool and spa which were well used during our stay.

The primary reason for visiting Carcassone and staying here was to visit the Medieval City, and this place is perfect for doing so. Whilst recognising the ongoing debate about whether it is better to stay inside or outside of the old city, this felt the best of both worlds – we were only a 5 min walk to the old city, so could explore it at will, and had dinner in the old city both nights, yet could also sit and admire the outsides of the city whilst enjoying a relaxing pre-dinner drink. Based on advice from the staff we also visited the “new town” part of Carcassone, which was a 15 minute walk away, and were so glad we did, as that part of the town had its own unique charm and appeal.

Internet access was generally good and we had breakfast one morning in the hotel which we paid for which was nice.

The staff were very helpful and friendly and able to help us out with all the questions we asked.

In summary I would definitely stay there again.

“Charming hotel”

This lovely hotel is perfectly located at the base of La Cite. Warm, welcoming and helpful staff. Very clean and well appointed rooms. Lovely breakfast room. A family of five, we had adjoining rooms which was great.

“Wonderful view of Carcassonne”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

The hotel is not inside the old city, but it's located in front of the main entrance and it gives a magnificent view of Carcassonne.
Room is clean, spacious and very comfortable. Staff is great. They also boasts a spa center, where I got an excellet massage.
From the terrace, where breakfast is served in the morning, you can sit and look at the old Carcassone just across the street. At night with the walls lit up it is a fantastic sight.
Great place to stay in.

“Quality accommodation in the perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

This is the perfect location without actually staying inside the old city. A quality hotel. Lovely spacious rooms. The staff were polite and helpful. Breakfast was extra but not worth it. Off- street parking was extra.

“Location just outside the castle is its best selling point”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

While the castle and the old city is magnificent, I'm glad we didn't opt to stay in one of the hotels within the medieval city's walls (La Cite) - the old world Hotel de la Cite (as charming as the stately hotel is), or the more modest Best Western. After sundown when the tourists leave, the ancient city within the castle walls gets a little dark, quiet, and somewhat eerie I might add (there is also an old cemetary on the city grounds).

So we were very happy we had chosen to stay at the Hotel du Chateau, facing the castle and literally just outside the city walls. The boutique hotel is newish and stylish, and boasts a Carita spa on site (although we didn't manage to try out the spa facilities in the 2 nights we were there as the spa was fully booked).

The hotel rooms were comfortable but small (Classic 14 sq m room, but felt smaller because of the layout). Comfortable bed, good quality toiletries, but unfortanately not enough space for 2 people's luggage. There is also no mini-fridge or even a table area you can stash your drinks and snacks, let alone any coffee or tea-making facility.

If you are in Carcassone just to visit the castle however (apparently Carcassonne is the 3rd most visited place in France!), I would still recommend staying at the Hotel du Chateau.

We paid €162 per night. If you find this a little too much, you can opt to stay at the property's sister hotel just across the road, the Montmorency.

The hotel charges €10 a night for its private parking. Breakfast at €12 on the terrace looked nice, however you can also opt to eat in the restaurants within the castle. Many of them offer a breakfast set for less.
