“Brilliant, old-style and great value”

What a great find! Genuinely local old-style restaurant with wonderful food and excellent wine by bottle or carafe (the Gamay was delicious). The cheese board is astonishing with twelve kinds of cheese (you help yourself to as much as you want), but the daily fixed price menu at 26 euros (weekdays only) offers a terrific range of provincial and classic French dishes. This is not a place for quick dining or those who are not willing to try at least a modicum of French, but a hundred times better than most of the awful touristy bistros by the Gar de Nord.

“A gem near the Gare du Nord”

Walk away from all the ghastly bars and brasseries facing the station, with their 'menu by photo' routine - which kind of says it all really... A few minutes away is this find - a bistrot like the old days. Not fancy-dan decor but good, honest French food. And decent wines too.

Carve out a few hours before your train and make this your last experience of Paris before heading back to Blighty. You'll not regret it!

“A little disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

We have visited Paris a lot and like to try and find recommended local French restaurants to eat in. This time was a day trip and we wanted somewhere near the Gare du Nord for an early dinner before the return train journey. I had checked the time out guide and trip advisor and was really looking forward to our meal.

The positives, it is very close to the station and the service was efficient. Some of the food was tasty - the venison stew was very good and the cheese plate is excellent.

The negatives, the restaurant was freezing and didn't really warm up as is filled up. The gentlemen serving both had colds and didn't appear to own hankies, the house wines that we tasted both had a rather unpleasant after taste (washing up liquid?), the menu is expensive for what you get and some of the courses were very average.

Maybe we are just spoilt living in London where the quality of food on offer is now very good and we probably suffered from the weak pound. Regardless I won't be going back.

“Authentic Neighbourhood Restaurant, Free of Tourist Trappings”

When I bought a flat in this area about 10 years ago, I took every one of my friends to this French bistro beautifully located on the Place Franz Liszt, with the Eglise St Vincent de Paul looming before it. I can still remember the thyme ice-cream I had there..sublime! Ten years on, and the place is still going strong, with one very noticeable improvement..the service! Much less haughty than in the past, and that can only be a good thing, right? When it comes to the food, my friend chose better than I did..a delicious carpaccio of haddock and other fish was divine whereas my starter was quite forgettable..so forgettable in fact, I can't remember what I had...I followed up with some venison..good enough, except there wasn't much of it. My friend stuck with the fish, and once more was rewarded for her choice. A cheese platter followed - we could have as many of the cheeses as we wanted -To finish off, my canny friend wrapped up her excellent meal with roasted figs with a lavender ice-cream -- truly fantastic! Helping keep the palate moist was a reasonably priced bottle of Beaumes de Venise, which was recommended by the waiter when it transpired the Cotes du Rhone I wanted was out of stock. So, how much did we pay for this feast - a mere 32 euros per person excluding wine - very good value considering the number of courses and the quality of the food. I'm selling my flat in Paris now, but it won't be the last time I'll be eating at Chez Casimir...Forget the Marais and its overpriced restaurants and come here for an authentic French meal.
