“A great way to really experience Paris”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

I have stayed at the Residence du Palais three times and thoroughly recommend it. The rooms are simple, clean and quite lovely. If you are lucky enough to be on the fourth floor the view is about as near to 'living' in Paris as you can get. The windows open out onto a small balcony. I tried the breakfast on my last visit and was a little disappointed, so I would probably recommend going downstairs to the cafe. Everything else about this quirky place is charming and the Jardin du Luxembourg is right across the street!

Room Tip: It's worth asking Nicolas if you can be on the fourth floor. He can sometimes oblige.

“I will not return...”

This was my 19th time in Paris and my first stay in Montparnasse, I thought the room was overpriced at 55 euros a night but I think the area is more upmarket than areas like Bastille, Oberkampf etc.

I have to admit though I was disappointed, it was noisy with children playing in the downstairs courtyard, the floors outside the room creeked at the slightest sound and the shower did not work in my room.

It was clean however and it was in a tradition Parisian building but for me I would prefer to stay closer to the action next time.

“Wonderful place, in front of Jardin du Luxembourg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

It's a simple hotel, but comfortable and very clean, located in 2 floors of an old little building in Saint Germain de Prés, 6ème arrondissement, Paris, just in front of the beautiful Jardin du Luxembourg. Saint Germain is a very elegant district of Paris, with all kinds of facilities arround and staying so close to the lovely gardens of Luxembourg is a real privilege. The hotel rooms have a very little bathroom but no toilets, which are in the ends of the corridors. Continental breakfast is served everyday, it costs 5 euros and I found it good enough for the price, with a hot drink, french bread, butter, jam, honey and cream cheese. There is a lift in the building which helps a lot, specially if the luggage is heavy. It's an excellent cost benefit.

“Cute, quaint & quiet”

Residence du Palais review

My friend & I (both 28 year old single females) stayed at Residence du Palais for two nights on May 26 & 27.
We arrived at 11:00am and were easily able to check-in at that time. If you're arriving before 8am or after 8pm, contact them to make plans for checking in.

The hotel is actually in a residential building, so it's slightly hard to find. Just pay attention to the building numbers/address when looking. Once you hit the button to enter the building, go up to the second floor and enter the office. They will give you your keys.

Our room was #18 on the fourth floor. There is an elevator, but for the two of us with large backpacks, we barely fit inside. Very small. The room had two beds (one twin, one full), as well as a small terrace, tv, and a shower & sink inside the room. The toilet is in the hallway, which looks like just a regular apartment building hallway.
Beds were very comfortable and warm. No complaints there.
The shower is TINY and hard to move around inside - but very clean and the water was warm.
They also do supply you with towels, but there is no hand soap.

When making your way to the hotel, take the RER blue line B south to the Place Royal stop. Head toward the fountain behind the Metro station & make a left onto Rue d'Assas. The hotel is about 5 blocks away on your left, right next to a restaurant called the News Cafe. We did eat lunch at the cafe and it was delicious.

All in all, I recommend this hotel. It's very quiet & quaint. A great find if you desire quiet and comfortable room with your own shower and don't mind sharing a toilet with the rest of the floor. We never once saw another soul on the floor though, never had to wait for the restroom.
I do think there are more fun, hip areas to stay in Paris (Montmarte, closer to the Eiffel Tower, closer to Notre Dame in the Latin Quarter), especially if you are young like us. But honestly, I have no complaints about the hotel itself. Very lovely & reasonably priced for those on a tight budget.

“Quintessentially French”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2011

Residence du Palais is located within the 6th arrondissement of Paris providing a very central base for your Paris trip. The closest metro station is Port Royal which is a 5 minute walk to/from the residence.

On the first day of our trip my wife and I managed to walk from the residence all the way to the champs-elysees, via the pantheon, the Latin Quarter, Notre-dame and the Louvre, starting with a lovely stroll through the adjacent to the Jardin du Luxembourg.

The residence has a quintessentially French feel about it, wooden floors, huge doors, old furniture and twisting staircases. Whilst I liked our room, the bed was very hard and although I had stayed in hostel accommodation before I found having to leave the room to use the toilet much more of a drag this time. I think this was because there was no sink in the toilet and you had to return to your room to wash your hands. There was also no soap provided so make sure you pack your own.

The residence also offers a breakfast service which we decided to try on our first morning. I was expecting a little more for my 5 Euros possibly from the breakfast picture that is on the residences official website which shows coffee, fresh juice & croissants. Instead there was just a coffee machine and bread, with nutella and jam sachets. On the other mornings we just picked up some pastries & coffee on the go for a similar or slightly cheaper price.

In summary I was happy with our choice to stay at Residence du Palais however if I was to return to Paris I would probably consider other hostels in the same area.
