“Ideal for a short stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

Ideally located, the hotel is opposite the railway and bus stations and only a few minutes walk from the shops and the beach. St Jean de Luz is a fine base for exploring, so not only is it easy to get to the Colbert when you arrive in the town but if you want to do days out by public transport it's on your doorstep. In spite of all these trains and buses we did not experience any noise disturbance in our room which was admittedly at the back of the hotel and I don't know whether the rooms at the front would be as quiet.

Our room was clean and very comfortable, a little on the small side but not cramped. We had a very good free wi-fi connection. And here's a rare treat: a French hotel with tea and coffee-making facilities in the rooms! :-)

The staff were friendly and anxious to please. The dining room is quite small so you can choose to have continental breakfast in your room, otherwise it's a varied buffet with eggs, cheeses, meats, pastries, etc in the dining room.

If you like small neighbourhood family-run restaurants that serve local food there are two brilliant ones very near the Colbert: Chez Pablo, which is in the Rue Mademoiselle Etcheto, and Irrintzina in the Rue St Jean. Opposite Irrintzina is an excellent pizzeria called Don Camillo. The best fish and seafood in town (moderately priced, too) is served at Le Dauphin, which is by the entrance to the pergola on the seafront.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel may be quieter.

“Adequate for a sort stay”

Arrival was a bit traumatic as parking we thought we had booked wasn't and we were given the wrong room. However room situation resolved quickly.
Parking in St jean can be a bit of a nightmare, we parked for an afternoon and overnight on a yellow line before moving to the station carpark which is free and therefore nearly always full!
Hotel Room was ok with fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. didn't use the restaurant for breakfast as it is much nicer to wander around to the Place Louis XIV for coffee & croissants and watch the world go by.
We hadn't been to St Jean for 15 years and was nice to see that the confetti still gets thrown on certain evenings and the musical entertainment hasn't changed that much.
Bit of a shock to see large cruise liner parked inside the jetties on one day.

When we travell in USA,Canada we usually stay in Best Western. They are nice chain of hotels. It's why without any hesitation we booked a room at Best Western in St.Jean-de-Luz.Such a disapointment! We were cheated right away.We book a room with breakfast for $ 87,but were offered the room for $ 100 with no breakfast! We are planning to stay there for 10 days, but we left as soon as we found another hotel.
The way we were treated left a "bad taste in our mouth".On a top of it some of our stuff went missing from the fridge.Employees have a very cheap attitude. Our holidays were almost spoiled.
We moved to " LES GOELANDS".The difference like day and night in everything and we stay there for 10 days.We think
this is the best Hotel in the St.Jean-De -Luz. We were treated like part of the family.By the way,at this hotel every third night is free.

“OK for an overnight stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2009

We stayed here for 1 night in July. Bedroom was pleasantly decorated but small, however I was expecting this from reading previous reviews. Good air conditioning. Hotel Colbert is an easy walk to the harbour and town, the station is opposite the hotel but no noise disturbance.Did not take breakfast as it seemed pricey, we ate at a cafe/bar near to the market place which was more interesting as we could view the locals coming and going. St Jean de Luz is no longer a "fishing village" it is much more commercial and was extremely busy in July. Lovely beach, nice shops, expensive. We had dinner at La Taverne Basque in the main restaurant row which was very good. Biarritz is much bigger but looked worth a stay next time. A bit like a mini Nice/South of France.

“Small and friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2009

Just returned from a weeks stay in the Hotel Colbert. Well situated opposite the station and bus station but noise level quite unobtrusive due to double glazing. The fishing port was just round the corner. Modern air conditioning unit - a bit like being on the flight deck of the starship Enterprise with flashing lights and electronic noises when first turned on - but very efficient and welcome when the temperatures outside are high. Tea and coffee making tray was provided on request. Yes the room was not over large but everything was there, it was very clean and the staff were very pleasant and friendly. The continental breakfast was a bit pricey but plentiful. All in all a very pleasant stay.
