“Boutique Bordeaux”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2010

L'Avant-Scene is a hidden gem of a hotel. Tucked away in the historic heart of Bordeaux's wine trading Chartrons district, it's an easy walk into town or down to the river. Architecturally it oozes charm from the stylish frontage to the well worn stone steps inside. One can't help wondering who walked here before and the stories they could tell. The elegant modern interior sits well with the 18th century building. We stayed in Room 8 at the front of the hotel which was spacious, comfortable and clean (the one with green curtains in photos). The staff were super friendly and helpful from providing lifts to and from the airport to bringing a wonderful breakfast to our room; we couldn't have asked for more. Friday night was obviously party night at the restaurant opposite so it was a bit noisy and this woke us several times however I honestly wouldn't let that put you off. Keep the windows closed and you'd be fine. Or take a room at the back.

If you're looking for a small, charming boutique hotel right in the heart of beautiful old Bordeaux then look no further. I would definitely stay there again.

“charming small hotel”

This small hotel is a little oasis in Bordeaux. We found the service to be very helpful (Jordan who was manning the front desk actually came with us to help us locate the parking area which was awkward to find due to road construction detours). Our room (#9) was spacious and quiet with a comfortable bed and all necessary amenities. Breakfast is available at the hotel for a small charge and it is delicious (fruit, homemade cake, yoghurt, tea, croissant, bread etc.) The hotel is located a 15-minute walk (along the boardwalk) to main shopping/dining areas but there is a tram service that is frequent and efficient that takes you practically to your street. The hotel decor is modern with terrific artwork everywhere. Like staying in a small art gallery. Bordeaux was a pleasant surprise to us--with its glorious architecture, lively restaurants and rejuvenated waterfront. This hotel is a real find in the city.

“L'Avant Scene, not what it appears.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

Our first impression of the hotel was positive. It's a charming boutique hotel in a very interesting area. The character of the old building that houses it has been maintained, and the renovations are very stylish, all dark wood and spare furnishings. Our bathroom had modern fixtures, a double shower head and fluffy towels. The room also had a table and two chairs plus a desk and chair and a large flat screen TV mounted on the wall. However, the light in the bathroom was inadequate, there was little room provided for toiletries. There was minimal closet space to hang things, so we had to live out of our suitcase for three days. It was very hot and the hotel does not have air conditioning. When we asked, we were provided with a fan. The bed, although comfortable, had a heavy duvet, which was not appropriate for the weather. We asked for a blanket instead and were told that there was none. The solution was to put a double sheet on the bed. We slept with the windows open, obviously, and awoke with mosquito bites. There was a plug-in insect repellent, but the smell was also repellent. Rather than pay 15 euros per personper day for a continental breakfast, we found places in the area to have coffee, juice and a croissant - one very nice patissierie turning left out the door of the hotel and left again on Rue Victor Hugo. Unfortunately that was closed on Sunday so we did have breakfast at the hotel on Sunday morning before getting an early start - bread and cakes, a pitcher of juice, coffee, jam and cheese. There is a charming, very good restaurant, Les Envoutes, diagonally across the street from the hotel with hosts who are très simpathiques.

“Lovely boutique hotel in a quiet area near the centre of town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2010

I stayed here for 2 nights and had a fantastic experience. The check-in was smooth and this modern hotel has a well designed feel whilst keeping the character of the building that it is in. The rooms all have slightly different designs and you can choose on-line which one you would like, which is quite nice. The room had a nice view over the roofs and a quiet nights sleep was had. Each room has a some original features, ours a fireplace, the wall mounted TV and Bose speakers is a nice touch too. Wi-Fi and LAN available for free and breakfast served in the room seems to be de rigour as there are only 3 tables downstairs. Breakfast was nice with a choice of juice, fresh fruit, pastries and bread but the coffee was a bit bitter and luke-warm.
In all an enjoyable stay which I would repeat.
