“Cosy, excellent value/money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2007

I spent there 2 nights with my wife a few years ago. Nothing very special - but the central location and the low price make this place highly recommended for budget travellers if you need a room not far from the restaurants and the old town and you don't mind the standard of the acommodation. Although it was pretty romantic to stay on the top floor (no lift) with a view of the church (the bells make lots of noise in the mornings, so beware the hangover). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for backpakers. PS. Everything in France is v. pricey - except the hotels. Strange.

“Kempf, Shmempf!”

Colmar is a beautiful town. Seek out the Old Town and 'Little Venice'.
For this, the Hotel Kempf is ideally placed — but that is all.
No telephone, no TV, no lift (a twisting noisy staircase). No off-strteet parking.
The place is in need of complete refurbishing: linoleum on the floor, dippy bed, rag-worn towels, a piece of soap, tasteless decor, small rooms etc.
On the good side, the price was considerably less than other hotels (?), and our rooms WERE clean.
Breakfast was extra: pleasant/ordinary + overpriced.

“You can do better”

The good news is that the staff are personable and speak servicable English. And the location is very central. Unfortunately, this doesn't compensate for the fact that our room was a tiny dingy cell with a window opening onto an airshaft with a miserable cat and litterbox at the bottom of it. Linoleum floor, dirty walls, grimy medieval bathroom, tiny threadbare towels. For 5 Euros less per night you can stay two blocks away at the spotless modern airconditioned Hotel Etap, which although it boasts only one star is infinitely less depressing. For two nights it was survivable, but I wouldn't stay there again if there were anything else available in the same price category. I think they stay in business by being in a highly visible location.

“WHAT A DUMP”

First the good thing about this shabby hotel. It is in the wonderful city of Colmar, France. The town of Colmar is right out of a story book and should not be missed. The Hotel Kempf @ 1 avenue de la République - 68000 Colmar is no way a two star, it is a run down Hotel the makes a NYC subway bathroom look clean. If I was back in Collage backpacking around then maybe this run down place with ripped rags for towels would do. But as a 30 something traveler I would much rather have the room that is clean and without bugs. So for my opinion stay away from the Hotel Kempf
