After reading some of the positive reviews on this site for Charingworth Manor and looking at the photographs of the rooms, my wife and I booked the Ebrington suite and stayed there last night (10 Jan 2012), on a special low season dinner+room deal which cost less than half the normal rate. As the title of my review suggests, we felt overall experience was quite ordinary (not special at all).
Being a very light sleeper I was particularly influenced by some comments on TripAdvisor about how quiet and isolated the hotel is. It certainly looked very promising as we approached the hotel after dark via their long driveway which emphasises how far back from the road the hotel is situated, but what you don't see is that there is another road at the rear of the hotel which turned out to be immediately adjacent to our bedroom! Vehicles came past our bedroom regularly until quite late at night and started again quite early in the morning.
Another disappointment was the fact that the majority of the bedrooms, (the Ebrington suite included) are not actually in the old manor house; they are situated in a two storey wing which appears to have been built in the last 25-50 years, albeit it in an olde worlde style. There is obviously no sound insulation to speak of between the floors because we could clearly hear other guests talking, coughing, using the toilet etc in the rooms below us. I discovered the following morning that there are apparently 7 rooms in the old manor house itself. These may be quieter and may explain some of the comments in other reviews.
The room itself was quite nice, as was the good sized bathroom with a good sized standalone bath, however the water runs into the bath very close to the plug hole and the cheap plastic (non original) bath plug had to be held in place until there was a considerable amount of water in the tub, I ended up weighing it down with a glass ornament! The tap over one of the sinks leaked water onto the bench top every time it was used and the top of the taps were filthy (see attached photo).
The room was nicely furnished and the bed itself was comfortable, but the six pillows were filled with cheap synthetic fibre rather than feathers.
The restaurant was quite nice and cosy, although unfortunately we were the only guests eating there (I appreciate that it was a quiet time of year). The 3 course meal included with our room rate was reasonably good, but nowhere near "one of the most exciting dining experiences in the Cotswolds" as stated on the hotel's web site. There was nothing wrong with it per se, but there is much better available in the Cotswolds, in fact we had a better meal at lunch in a pub the next day. The limited wine list was okay, but I wouldn't want to have chosen from it for several nights in a row.
In summary, it was questionable whether the experience was worth the price at less than half the published rate. If we had paid full price we would have been very upset. In our opinion there are numerous better places to stay and/or dine in and around the Cotswolds. Needless to say we would not stay at Charingworth Manor again. It wasn't actually our first choice for last night but our first choice of hotel was fully booked, while Charingworth Manor was almost empty, this in itself speaks volumes.
To qualify this review, although we now live in Australia we have family in the UK whom we visit regularly and we have stayed in and around the cotswolds many times over the last 20 years, including holding our wedding reception at another old Cotswolds manor house.
Room Tip: I would suggest that you make sure you get one of the 7 rooms in the old manor house itself.

Thank you very much for your comments, we do like to hear these whether they are positive or constructive.
We do have a mix of rooms here at the hotel with suites as you stayed in, in both the original 600 year old manor and the, cottages and stables that you stayed in, which are in the main still over 200 years old.
I’m sorry for the maintenance issues you experienced, we have now rectified the leaking tap in the room.
It is a shame you did not speak with us whilst you were in the hotel as we do like to try to rectify issues as they arise and I’m sure all or most of the points you raised could have been resolved during your stay, we should have been able to offer or a t least show you some other rooms that may have been more suitable.
I would be more than happy to discuss any off the issues with you directly should you wish to contact me here at the hotel
