“More Hostel than Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Spent a night here while away on business on the recommendation of the local staff who, I an now convinced, were having a laugh.

When a colleague of mine dropped me off here I was warned about the area - not one to go wondering out in - good start! Still I had no intention of wondering out - just a comfy room with somewhere to have a nice meal and maybe a drink of two to settle down for the night - almost as soon as I came through the doors I knew this wasn't going to happen.

The check in was fine, the receptionist (and indeed all the staff) friendly and helpful. She pointed out the bar - what can best be described as a counter off the lobby on the way to the lift. Not very inviting i how its best described.

I found my room eventually - a completely illogical numbering system meaning I almost gave up before happening upon it by chance. The layout of the place is a firetrap - if ever they do have the misfortune then it numerous doors etc will disorientate everyone.

The room was whats best described as basic. The bed reasonable in size and comfort but all with that "been around" feeling. The noise from the floorboards was ridiculous and then I discovered I had a connecting room. The door was locked but I was treated to the sounds of everything - and I mean everything - that went on next door.

There was no sockets by the bed so the charge my phone I had to unplug the TV - not a huge inconvenience for me but would be for many and in 2012 is crazy.

After a while I talked myself into going for food so tried the "bar" - chose a burger from a poor menu but there were no burgers left! Had the Korma which was average. There were 5 guests in the lobby while I was there - all male and most seemed to like the place - I can se where the positive reviews come from.

Headed for bed, the nights sleep in fainess was comfy, the bed solid but still the feeling of everyting being dirty. The following morning I tried the shower - as a previous contributor noted it was terrible - less than a trickle - thankfully there was no shampoo supplied so a rinse did the trick. The sink didn't have mixer taps so washing was a chore full stop.

Checked out then grabbed brekkie - no bread for toast (at least not on display). The hot breakfast was terrible - poor quality food and frozen hash browns with luke warm tea. Knocked it back and left.

There are so many hotels in Watford to choose from and many for less or the same price - I have no idea why people willingly pick this place. I certainly won't be again but I'm sure some people will be more than happy with it.

2 stars purely based on the friendliness of the staff.

“not a fantastic stay”

rooms downstairs are cold and noisey they overlook a small car park on a busy main road especially when local football is on and the back entrance can only be described as a alleyway which you would have to crawl through rather than stand without hitting your head on something

Room Tip: dont have a room on the ground floor

“Well Worth it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

I've stopped here several times over the last four years, The service has always been good and it has even improved, This trip was 28 Nov to 01 Dec and I was in room 158 very pleasent, Pam in the Breakfast lounge always has a smile and is excellent in her attention, Good Rates, the parking can be tight, especially if a large white van parks in the rear car park,Good links to Railway and Buses, 5 mins walk to shops, easy road link, Back Next week,

Room Tip: No real issues with any, Room 158 good

“Excellent Service, Pity about Shower”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Firstly, to keep your expectations real, this hotel is very dated in appearance and decor. However the rooms are very comfortable and clean. The service is the best I've experience (although this probably says as much about the service you generally get). All the staff were very welcoming and extremely helpful. It's one big downfall was the shower. The water coming from the taps would be gussing and perfect temperature but once it went through the shower it became a dribble and the temperature was random and fluctuating! I ended up putting my head under the bath taps. I really vaue a good shower so if you're a bath person this hotel would be great.

“Saved by the Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

Let's go for the good stuff first: Super staff, very friendly & helpful, good parking tucked away and reasonably secure, nice bar/lounge area, very comfy beds and especially superb pillows. Warm clean room, ditto bathroom & unusually huge towels and overall good location.

The not so good stuff: Very creaky floors & thin walls - woken by much stomping about and the delight of the sounds of our neigbour burping, farting and going to the toilet at 5am! I booked a suite expecting a separate sitting area/room but was just a sofa a small table in the one room. Very dated presentation especially with regard to bathroom & TV - very limited channels, not even full freeview and I had to make some technical adjustments to the TV to make it audio/visual acceptable. The hotels IP address was blocked by one spam agency which meant I couldn't use their wifi to send emails. The food was OK but I ordered one nasi goreng which was as far from indonesia as ummm well, Watford and had to complain about that. No shampoo/conditioner provided in the bathroom which would have been useful and to be fair, expected these days.

Overall, yes I would stay here again because the staff do make you feel very comfortable and welcome - I was travelling with my young son and it worked for us but I would totally recommend ear plugs or sleeping pills for a good nights rest. Stick to the basics on the menu (my son had ham, egg, chips & onion rings which were absolutely fine).
