Spent a night here while away on business on the recommendation of the local staff who, I an now convinced, were having a laugh.
When a colleague of mine dropped me off here I was warned about the area - not one to go wondering out in - good start! Still I had no intention of wondering out - just a comfy room with somewhere to have a nice meal and maybe a drink of two to settle down for the night - almost as soon as I came through the doors I knew this wasn't going to happen.
The check in was fine, the receptionist (and indeed all the staff) friendly and helpful. She pointed out the bar - what can best be described as a counter off the lobby on the way to the lift. Not very inviting i how its best described.
I found my room eventually - a completely illogical numbering system meaning I almost gave up before happening upon it by chance. The layout of the place is a firetrap - if ever they do have the misfortune then it numerous doors etc will disorientate everyone.
The room was whats best described as basic. The bed reasonable in size and comfort but all with that "been around" feeling. The noise from the floorboards was ridiculous and then I discovered I had a connecting room. The door was locked but I was treated to the sounds of everything - and I mean everything - that went on next door.
There was no sockets by the bed so the charge my phone I had to unplug the TV - not a huge inconvenience for me but would be for many and in 2012 is crazy.
After a while I talked myself into going for food so tried the "bar" - chose a burger from a poor menu but there were no burgers left! Had the Korma which was average. There were 5 guests in the lobby while I was there - all male and most seemed to like the place - I can se where the positive reviews come from.
Headed for bed, the nights sleep in fainess was comfy, the bed solid but still the feeling of everyting being dirty. The following morning I tried the shower - as a previous contributor noted it was terrible - less than a trickle - thankfully there was no shampoo supplied so a rinse did the trick. The sink didn't have mixer taps so washing was a chore full stop.
Checked out then grabbed brekkie - no bread for toast (at least not on display). The hot breakfast was terrible - poor quality food and frozen hash browns with luke warm tea. Knocked it back and left.
There are so many hotels in Watford to choose from and many for less or the same price - I have no idea why people willingly pick this place. I certainly won't be again but I'm sure some people will be more than happy with it.
2 stars purely based on the friendliness of the staff.
