we stayed at the hotel in Cricklade on Saturday 22nd March 08 and were extremely disappointed with the whole experience. From arriving at the hotel, the barmaid asked if we were there for a dirty weekend or just passing through, to the breakfast service which was different to say the least.
when we arrived we were told in a very offhand manner that we would have to pay in advance, which is somewhat unusual to say the least. We were then asked if we were at the hotel for a dirty weekend or just passing through, we declined to answer that question on a number of counts which are that (a) i was with my wife, and (b) that at the age of 62 the chances of having a dirty weekend I would place as unlikely.
We were given a key to room 5 and told it was at the top of the stairs, when we entered the room the bed was wet through to the mattress. we returned to the bar to inform the staff member who 'welcomed' us that this was unlikely as the room had be cleaned that day ! an air of disbelief remained until we presented the staff member with the obvious evidence. We then returned to the ground floor to be again redirected to room 11, all of this time carrying cases.
Whilst the room that was then provided was of a very average nature, the decor was jaded and of 1950s appearance, it was clean.
Now to breakfast, we entered the dining room but saw no one for a full five minutes, there were other customers in the dinning room who also seemed to be waiting. The waitress appeared to tell us she would be with us soon which she was after a further 10 minutes of waiting. We ordered breakfast which was basic and of low quality ingredients. The apparent reason why the waitress was so long in attending to our order was she also doubled as the cleaner in the bar and the chef doubled as the waiter when the waitress was away cleaning, all in all a very confusing breakfast arrangement.
As you can by now appreciate we were less than impressed with our stay at
this establishment the one saving grace was that we chose to eat at the Red Lion further down the High Street which was a first class meal and first class service.
