We stayed two nights at the Burrastow house while on a return trip to the Shetlands several weeks ago, and while it was a bit more in cost than what we usually spend on accommodations, we enjoyed our stay and wished we had the money to splurge and spend several more nights.
The original Burrastow House is quite old, but inside, it has been remodeled in part, where the guest bedrooms are located. The bedrooms were spacious – at least the two loft rooms, (2nd floor) with a very modern interior design. In fact, I was in awe of the bathroom with all of the ‘state of the art’ fixtures (hence my photos) and the views out of the windows on the top floor were fabulous. The dining room where we ate breakfast, the kitchen, and private area of the home, were more historic and almost like being in a different home.
The B&B is located about 45 minutes from Lerwick, and about 30 of those minutes included a drive down to the end of a single track road - truly in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly the kind of place we enjoy. There are some wonderful hikes you can take from the home, and apparently there are occasional otters which frequent the beach by the home although usually in the early morning.
The breakfast was lovely with great hospitality. We chose not to have dinner there, in part because of the cost (35 GBP per person). Even at home, I would be hard-pressed to spend essentially $60 per person on a meal, but I can imagine it would have been a lovely and elegant meal, and it would have been much more convenient than driving into Lerwick for dinner. I would highly recommend a stay at the Burrastow House if you are not on a tight budget or are willing to splurge a bit, as it was a wonderful experience.
Room Tip: The two 2nd floor loft rooms have some wonderful views.
