“SUPER FANTASTIC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

Pierre who owns & runs this place is just FAB. He is a GREAT chef a lovely & interesting person. He runs all of 14 rooms with just 1 additional help. So this means all that he does has his personal touch in it. Lovely house on a FAB island at an even better location, a must stay if one is going to Shetland. We will definitely be going back soon. There is really not much to write about this place except say FABULOUS. About 20 to 25 minutes drive (80 km per hour) from city centre i.e. Lerwick, one would need to depend on Pierre for his specialties which are totally worth it. He offers breakfast & dinner, lunch one needs to figure on your own. A bit expensive but totally worth the experience.

Room Tip: all the rooms are different & have something unique about them. We preferred staying on the olde...

“Loved the location and our stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

We stayed two nights at the Burrastow house while on a return trip to the Shetlands several weeks ago, and while it was a bit more in cost than what we usually spend on accommodations, we enjoyed our stay and wished we had the money to splurge and spend several more nights.

The original Burrastow House is quite old, but inside, it has been remodeled in part, where the guest bedrooms are located. The bedrooms were spacious – at least the two loft rooms, (2nd floor) with a very modern interior design. In fact, I was in awe of the bathroom with all of the ‘state of the art’ fixtures (hence my photos) and the views out of the windows on the top floor were fabulous. The dining room where we ate breakfast, the kitchen, and private area of the home, were more historic and almost like being in a different home.

The B&B is located about 45 minutes from Lerwick, and about 30 of those minutes included a drive down to the end of a single track road - truly in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly the kind of place we enjoy. There are some wonderful hikes you can take from the home, and apparently there are occasional otters which frequent the beach by the home although usually in the early morning.

The breakfast was lovely with great hospitality. We chose not to have dinner there, in part because of the cost (35 GBP per person). Even at home, I would be hard-pressed to spend essentially $60 per person on a meal, but I can imagine it would have been a lovely and elegant meal, and it would have been much more convenient than driving into Lerwick for dinner. I would highly recommend a stay at the Burrastow House if you are not on a tight budget or are willing to splurge a bit, as it was a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: The two 2nd floor loft rooms have some wonderful views.

“Spectacular location and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2011

We stayed in the Laird's Room at Burrastow House for five nights on our honeymoon. It was a romantic location (the room looked out on the loch on two sides so you could watch the terns fishing and the odd seal go by) . The room was comfortable. The food was really excellent and as other reviewers have said you have to drive quite a long way to find another evening meal, which although perhaps cheaper will not be as delicious. Compared to the bed and breakfasts we stayed in on this holiday, the service was not as personal or attentive. The breakfasts were a bit disappointing (especially when the evening meal set such high standards) but then we had just stayed in a B&B where the hostess cooked scrambled eggs freshly laid by her chickens. I recommend booking Burrastow House when you want to stay in a beautiful place and eat a delicious evening meal without being too worried about the price - it's something to do as a treat.

Room Tip: The Laird's Room is beautiful

Check out the different rooms on the Burrastow House website: we chose Foula Loft, recently furbished, spacious, clean and light, with a well designed bathroom. Only the sounds of the birds and the (very!) early dawn will wake you in this peaceful spot. Pierre's cooking is, as others have said, excellent - and it's rather relaxing not to have to bother with menus and to enjoy his well balanced dishes. The (40 minute) drive from Lerwick is spectacular - and more than worth it to stay in this rather eccentric, but hugely enjoyable house.

“Criticisms are not really relevant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

My wife and I stayed at Burrastow House for the nights of 16th. & 17th. May 2011.
There is not much to add to the favourable postings already made. The quiet and peacful locatioin could not be bettered. The house is in the old but traditional lairds-house style. The owner, Pierre, and his staff are charming and helpful - plus Pierre is an excellent cook, which is just as well as there is nowhere else to eat without travelling some distance.
Criticisms could be made of the need for maintrenance of the house and rooms - plumbing and heating systems etc., but that would be to miss the point of Burrastow House as a brief holiday location - it is what it is, so enjoy it.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the large rooms in the old house.
