My father, 7-yr-old son, and I stayed at this wonderful castle on our British Open trip this summer -- 2 nights with the Moncreifs, husband and wife who were gracious hosts. Turning off the rural road, driving up the wooded lane, and rounding the bend brought us to the breathtaking grounds of this centuries' old home...peacocks and exotic trees, the witches maze, dogs scampering through the lawn. The inside was grand and cozy all at once. The breakfasts were fresh and delicious in the downstairs sitting room, complete with ancient fireplace and comfy leather chairs. The upstairs great hall featured a fireplace large enough for several people to sit in while warming hands and toes.
Lord Moncreif had taken the time to research our family name's presence in the area, having heard that we were looking for old roots. He was prepared on our arrival with maps, local knowledge books, and lots of interesting stories about the surrounding towns and landscape.
Our bedrooms were traditionally decorated and very comfortable - bedding was especially cozy. We walked the spiral stairs in the tower to reach our bathroom, which was contemporary/completely up-to-date...could have been straight out of a higher-end modern B&B. The location of the castle is excellent for visiting the coast to the east, the inland west, and Edinburgh. Everything is so close by in the this small country that we took in many sights and different types of geography in a short while. We were able to stay here the night before our early morning departure from Edinburgh Airport without a problem.
Overall, very highly recommended. We will most certainly come back the next time we are in Scotland!
