“A fantastic hotel, a stones throw away from Princes Street.”

After a LONG trip up, we arrived at The Place to a very friendly and helpful receptionist (Petra I think?) who couldn't do enough to help. We had a minor issue with our allocated room which Petra dealt with quickly and efficiently and the outcome of which exceeded our expectations!

Our new room was stunning! The bed was the largest I've ever seen, as was the room, the lampshade etc..! The room had it's own sitting area, a beautiful en-suite, three floor to ceiling windows which had a wonderful view and a funky light with changing colours! Everything was spotless. The room was at the back of the hotel, which we were grateful for as the previous room had been located at the front and did seem a little noisy due to the traffic. We were disturbed during the first night by what seemed like a party going on until at least 3 am. However, once alerted, the night staff dealt with the situation quickly.

We spoke to a few different staff over our three days and all of them incredibly helpful, suggesting places to visit, giving directions to ice-cream parlours and even posting our post cards for us! Your staff are a credit to you!

Breakfast was good although choice was rather limited in comparison to some lesser rated establishments we have stayed at. However, everything we had was delicious and beautifully cooked. I would recommend having the Scottish breakfast just for the haggis if nothing else!

The car parking was a welcome addition (although we did have to pay for it, £12 per day which believe is a good price for Edinburgh).

In summary, a stunning hotel which we would highly recommend to anyone who likes a touch of luxury for a superb price.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room at the back of the hotel.

Dear Lovells
many thanks for your very recent review and your time to write it.
Delighted that you found our offering fantastic, our staff a credit to us, our location great and our city centre car park offering is great value.
Glad you enjoyed a good breakfast which we are tweaking in response to our guests. The haggis will be staying so please don't worry!
Looking forward to welcoming you back in 2012.
Best regards

“Great Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

All staff were very polite and helpful, particuarly the 3 different front desk personnel and the 2 morning waitresses. Our bedroom was large, with a big comfortable bed, the bathroom was well appointed(no bath though). The location is very handy, with Princes Street just 5 minutes away.
Just 2 minor issues to be aware of, the first is the noise from the main road at the front of the hotel and the second is the distinctly average breakfast. We had no problem with the basic buffet, but were disappointed in the cooked offerings. Firstly, the menu offered 'poached haddock', on both days it was unavailable. Secondly the sausage served up as part of the traditional scottish breakfast was frankly disgusting. Apparently the owners are muslim, and for this reason offer no pork sausage or bacon at breakfast. Perhaps, this is something they should make clear.
I must emhasise though, if you're wanting a well priced, well located, clean hotel with wonderful staff
in Edinburgh, this hotel is an excellent option.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back may be quieter.

Dear Cumbrianlad
thank you for your review and taking the time to post your comments.
It is only with feedback like yours that we are able to adjust and tweak our new offering.
Regarding your two minor issues;
as you may or may not have been aware during your visit, we had a refurbishment company in to overhaul the listed sash and case windows. I'm delighted to announce that all of the bedroom windows overlooking the front of the property have been completed. As with all city centre hotels there will be some ambient noise but this has been reduced by up to 60%.

I appreciate your opinion on the breakfast but would like to refer you to the many other reviewers below whom disagree. Our offering is superior to many hotels, with a cold continental choice in addition to the many additional dishes like kippers, pancakes or eggs Florentine. Apologies for the lack of haddock which was a supplier issue. A cooked rather than a "traditional" Scottish Breakfast is offered and seen by many as a secondary choice. This is the first time a grumble regarding no bacon has been raised. Of course the religion of the Owners has been taken into account but I do disagree with you that our local butcher beef and lamb sausages are inedible. The lack of one meat type should not be seen as a distraction from what is an excellent menu choice from locally sourced producers and suppliers that allows us to offer alternatives to delight all palates.

I have passed on your kind words about the Team and I am glad that they were able to offer you all of the help and assistance you needed.

Hoping we have the opportunity to welcome you back in 2012

Best regards
Neil

What did we like about it?
Extremely friendly and helpful staff.
Fantastic location one street away from Princes Street, opposite The Stand Comedy Club and very near to the Playhouse Theatre.
Huge room, which was immaculate.
An extremely comfortable bed.
A delicious breakfast Our choice? Muffins with smoked salmon and poached eggs.
Brilliant value for money.

Wish list? Wi Fi that worked (happy to pay extra) and a shower cap!

“Excellent new hotel in Edinburgh, worth a visit just to see the creative lighting.”

Stayed here for the 6Nations, staff were attentive, polite and happy to help. It has a relaxed atmosphere about it.
The room was spacious, modern and prestine.
The only feedback I would give would be: it'd be nice to have a complementary bottle of water in the room and a guide for the hotel (ie. restaurant open times....etc) and general tourist points for the town.
I hope The Place has a successful first year.
