I stayed in Eglinton Youth Hostel, within easy walking distance of Haymarket Railway Station and a short bus ride from Princes Street. It is in an elegant terrace with huge doors and windows, very smart inside and the staff are very friendly. The beds are soft and very comfortable and if you go there when it's quiet you can have a big high-ceilinged room to yourself.I find that in B and B's I am overfaced by a plateful of cooked breakfast that I don't really want, but on the other hand, since I've paid for it I don't like to waste it. So I appreciate being able to cater for myself in the Youth Hostel, or alternatively, pay per item for a hostel breakfast, so I only pay for what I want to eat. There was also a choice of good lounges in the hostel, with a chance of enjoying good company. I'll be returning to Edinburgh as I could happily spend about 10 - 14 days there, so at £12 a night for this Hostel I don't think I'll be sampling any of the local hotels or B&B's.You need to be a member of the YHA or the SYHA, which isn't expensive. There is another Youth Hostel at Bruntsfield at the same price, but it is not convenient for the railway station.
