My husband and I stayed at the Dunstane House Hotel for three nights in October 2011. We had taken the train from London and after a not-so-great experience at our hotel there, this was definitely a lovely change.
The hotel was very easy to find as it is along the main road when you exit the train station. We chose to walk to the hotel from the train station (maybe a 10-15 minute walk), but if you have mobility issues you may wish to take a taxi or the bus instead. The hotel is about a 30 minute walk from the main centre of Edinburgh, but is an easy walk or an even easier bus ride as the stop is literally outside the door of the hotel. We found getting around very easy.
Our room was a fairly normal-sized standard room, even by most North American standards, and the bathroom was perfectly spotless. The shower stall was a tiny bit cramped, but the toiletries they offer were lovely, and the water pressure is very good. The rooms were tastefully decorated, and the style suits the feel of the house that this hotel once was.
We ate 2 of our dinners at The Stane Bar (serves the same menu as The Skerries, but in a more casual environment), and all of our breakfasts at the hotel (we had the room plus breakfast package), and the food was also very good. The breakfast room is lovely and never full or crowded. The tables are all spaced a good distance apart and all 3 mornings that we ate there we did not have to wait even a moment for a seat. There are cloth napkins and individual jars of jams and marmalade, and you get your very own silver pot of coffee (or hot water if you choose to have tea) so you can have several cups if you wish, and the coffee was absolutely wonderful. There is a fireplace and the ceilings are very high making the room feel very spacious, but still cozy at the same time.
There is a very good selection of breakfast and brunch items from the menu, as well as cereals, fruit, baked goods, juices, etc. from the buffet table as well. The first morning I tried the scrambled eggs with orkney smoked salmon and it was very nice.
The staff at the Dunstane House Hotel is very friendly and helpful. We did a scotch tasting one night and the bartender at The Stane bar made recommendations and helped us with our selections.
Overall our experience in Edinburgh was excellent; Edinburgh is a beautiful city and we enjoyed ourselves very much, and had a very relaxing and pleasant stay at the Dunstane House Hotel. I would highly recommend this location for anyone travelling to Edinburgh. Although it is a fair ways outside of the city proper, the fact that the bus is so readily available and the walk to town is so pleasant, this minor detail does not reflect negatively on this property in any way.
