“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2012

Just returned from a couple of days in Edinburgh and stayed here. First impressions are important and this hotel gives out good ones as soon as you walk through the front door. A very warm welcome from the staff, very courteous and helpful and a fire in the lounge on a cold winters day is always a welcome site. Our room was not one of the rooms shown on the website but this did not detract, it was spotlessly clean, a very comfortable bed, flat screen tv ( that could actually be watched, unlike some other places i've stayed) tea/coffee and a clean bathroom with plenty of towels etc. A real bonus is free WiFi throughout the building something other hotels charge for and a very welcome service. The bedroom furniture need updating a little but apart from that a very nice room. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the concierge 'Scott' deserves a mention he seems to be a font of knowledge. We didn't have dinner their so I cant comment on the dinner menu but breakfast was delicious, a choice of cereal fruit juice etc and a cooked to order Scottish breakfast was delicious so much better that the usual help yourself buffet, the restaurant staff were also lovely, keeping the really good coffee coming until i floated out I (love my morning coffee) . This hotel is about a 20 min walk from Waverley railway station or the no 36 bust from outside the station stops a few hundred yards from the hotel. It is well worth the trouble getting here and I highly recommend giving some of the others nearer the city centre a miss.
Giving them a try I don't think you will be disappointed.

Thank you for your review calling us a Hidden Gem, and we are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your stay with us. Scott is a fountain of knowledge indeed as to where to go and what to see. With regards to the bedroom furniture we have just started a refurbishment programme for several of the rooms and I'm sure you'll like the results so please do let us know if you are returning.

“Fabulous staff, dated rooms.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2012

Twenty minute walk from city centre. Disappointed in the twin room when we arrived. Extremely dated fixtures and fittings. Certainly not one of the rooms used on the Internet pages. Avoid room 45. Staff however were a credit to this hotel. Courteaous and helpful at all times. Well presented breakfast. Would set you up for a days sight seeing in this beautiful city

Thank you for your recent review for your stay at Channings. We are disappointed to hear that you did not like room 45, but please contact us directly if you are returning and we can look at other options for you. Our unique selling point is that no 2 rooms are furnished and decorated the same in Channings, so we have something to please everyone. Delighted that our staff were of assistance to you and that you enjoyed our breakfast.

Thank you for staying with us on your recent business trip to Edinburgh. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the charm of the hotel (we do too!). We are about a 10 minute walk to the centre of town, but enjoy the tranquility of the area making a trip to Edinburgh much more relaxing.

“Wouldn't stay anywhere else”

This is my fourth stay at the hotel and wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in Edinburgh. From the moment you walk through the doors you feel at ease, the staff are incredibly helpful and are always willing to help. Breakfast and dinner were high quality as usual. Sunday morning was a little slow but in fairness to the staff every table in the restaurant was taken. The added benefit of free Wi-Fi also helps. My only criticism is the pillows which were way too soft. I asked for firmer pillows but was brought the same type. But thats a personal thing - other than that a faultless stay in a great hotel

Room Tip: Pay the little extra for suite or superior room. We had the James Caird suite which is an extremely...

A great review - thank you! Please let us know if you are returning and we'll arrange in advance to have firmer pillows organised for your visit. A great tip as well - The Superior Rooms and Junior Suites on the top floor are fantastic with lovely roll top baths and black and white images of Shackleton's Antarctic Explorations.

“So friendly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

From the moment we arrived until our departure, nothing was too much trouble. The cooked-to-order breakfast was superb, making full use of locally sourced produce. The staff were well informed and helpful. We would go back again but aim to book a room on the top floor to experience the roll-top baths etc.

Thank you for your review from your recent stay with us. Our staff are always willing to help - and infact have even won awards in the past making us the 'Friendliest Hotel in Edinburgh'. If you do come back (which we hope you do) then we thoroughly recommend our rooms on the top floor with the roll top baths!
