“The search is over, we have finally found our perfect Guest House in Oban”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

My wife and I travel to Argyll, on business, several times each year. Oban is the ideal location to use as a base from which we can visit customers throughout this beautiful area of Scotland. When you are staying away from home, either on business or holiday, it is important to be able to look forward to the best possible accommodation at the end of each day.
Over the past few years we have stayed at many different Guest Houses without quite finding the quality, standard and enviroment which would make us look forward to returning, until now ! We have discovered Glenbervie Guest House, owned and managed by Iain and Joan Auld.
From the moment we were warmly welcomed at the front door and accompanied to our modern, tastefully decorated room we knew that we had at last found our ideal location. Iain and Joan have created a relaxed and high quality ambience throughout the house, and with full occupany of their 8 rooms, (always a good sign) at the time of our stay, always had time for conversations with their guests, providing a wealth of information regarding the local area, attractions, restaurants, travel etc. Their enthusiasm for Oban and Argyll is very genuine. We enjoyed very comfortable and peaceful nights' sleep and woke refreshed each morning. Breakfast served in a dining room which commands one of the best views in Scotland, overlooking Oban Bay. Whether your preference is for a cooked or continental option, an extensive selection of fresh, local produce is available.
We are already looking forward to our next visit.

“Peaceful, Homely and Great Location”

A week before I was due to stay at Glenbervie I read the reviews and was worried to say the least. However, when I arrived I found none of the situations described. The room was clean as was our friends room. The milk was and continued to be in date. The owners were friendly, rang for taxis for us, asked each day where we were going and then the next day had we had a good time. When we needed to have an early breakfast due to catching a ferry a continental breakfast was available for us. A lovely home from home , I would stay there again without question if I was in the area. Incidentally, the guest review book in reception all gave good reviews except for one.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the hotel have glorious views over the sea (room 4) All rooms are lovely a...

“the guest house with no frying pan!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

4 of us recently stayed here 2 nights. ornamental frogs everywhere, the accomodation is old fashioned and in the bedroom the sachets of milk were one week out of date so i emptied them all in the sink, however after the room had been cleaned i checked the replenished milk and again it was the same as the day before out of date. in the morning when breakfast arrived there was a poached egg, 1 rasher bacon, 1/2 tomato and an uncooked potato scone placed on a plate which was the size of a side plate and needless to say wasn't very pallatable and the toast was burnt. next morning i asked the man who took my order if i could have my egg and potato scone fried.he looked very embarrassed and apologetically told me they didn't have a frying pan! again it was poached egg and watery mushrooms. when our toast arrived it was burnt again and i had to request some more lightly cooked toast. i think his wife did the cooking and kept well hidden away until it was time to pay the bill. when we were paying the bill i told her that the milk sachets in the bedroom were out of date and she looked at me and said "oh! that's the chaimbermaids fault". no apology, she wasn't bothered. wouldn't go back there.

“Not what you expect after getting to know scottish hospitality....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2011

We stayed at Glenbervie for one night in June 2011 (we were booked elsewhere but had to stay there because our original BB choice was not accepting any guests on that night). We were received by the land lady (who didn't even bother to introduce herself or ask us about our names or anything else for that matter), she showed me our room (which was a twin en-suite on the ground floor - really noisy because the breakfast room was just opposite our room and the attic in front of our room was the main guests sitting area). The room was rather small (unsuitable for two people with TWO - of course!!! - suitcases), the toilet was tiny and in the whole everything seemed clean but once you paid attention to the details things became uglier! We were told that breakfast was strictly from 08.00 - 08.30 (!!!!!!) and it was all that the other guests reviews here say - absolutely fixed! No choise! My coffee mug was dirty, I had them change it for me but NO apologies were given, but in all we didn't touch much of our breakfast (wouldn't trust cleanliness). On top of everything, my friend woke up in the middle of the night to find a cokroach in our room, which she didn't manage to kill and we spent half our night searching whether it might have found its way inside our things! When she told the landlady in the morning the answer she got was "Oh, it must have come through the window" (!?!!!!!!!!?!???) Of course no apologies were included here either.
After having spent 10 days in Scotland and having stayed in several BBs and Hotels I must admit this was the worse experience - not really or -at least- because of the room or the breakfast, but because of their behaviour. This is not what scottish hospitality is in reality. Go anywhere else, they will make you feel at home and you will be saying goobye as if you were leaving a dear friend. These people acted like professionals, knowing they would propably never see us again so why should they care??? And all that at a price 30% higher than what we paid to stay in a 4-star hotel downtown Glasgow, with an excellent choise for breakfast and the nicest staff ever!

“Nice rooms but very cluttered.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2010

A reasonable guest house which was clean and looked after but far too many cushions and nik naks - it was extremely cluttered. The bed was comfortable and the location was good with nice views across the bay from the lounge and breakfast room. Our bedroom looked out over a bowling green. The breakfast was basic but lacked the black pudding which would have added a touch of luxury. They advertise parking for six cars but these are end on end so some car shuffling is required if you are first in and want to be first out. The hosts weren't overly welcoming but were polite They weren't available when I went to ask for an extra lamp for our room.
