“Fabulous House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2011

Slightly apprehensive based on some of the reviews, but were very pleasantly surprised. Made to feel very welcome by the owner for whom nothing was too much trouble and cooked a great breakfast each morning. Our room was incredibly spacious and overlooked the beautiful grounds and with very large bathroom. Lovely fluffy towels and good quality bedding all very clean. Hot drinks, water and fresh fruit provided in the room. There were a few cobwebs about but it is difficult to keep rooms clean when the ceilings are 20 feet high. There is a lovely walk through the grounds directly onto the beach. Well worth a stay.

“Very special place and experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

Gorgeous country home filled with antiques. Mr Corbett, the owner, will be your host. He's a gracious, fascinating gentleman. Home-baked cake with afternoon tea by the fire, talking to Mr Corbett, a highlight.

“Nearly but not quite.....”

Stayed one night.
Most enjoyable company at dinner in a lovely Georgian dining room (with another couple who were staying) and a congenial host.
Lovely house/home let down somewhat by decor [bedroom], dust and cobwebs..and extremely dirty windows. Not so much shabby chic as shabby shabby.
Bathroom had ivy/ creeper growing through window and evidence of lots of silicone around shower etc.
Would have no real complaints if staying as a house guest, but paying for the experience leaves room for improvement. Eg.
Used soap still in the shower from previous guests.
Yoghurts out of date@ breakfast

Generally the place seems to be lacking TLC and attention to detail.

Lovely private beach close by and lots of outdoor equestrian space.......ideal.

Wanted to like Tyrella House more than we actually did and with a little effort it could be a destinaton in its own right, but as it is, I wouldnt recommend .

“Thank you David, our exceptional host.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

My wife and I stayed for one week at Tyrella House. Our first real vacation since I retired Sept '09. My work colleagues very kindly gave us a "Hidden Ireland" voucher. David (owner of Tyrella)made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Do not leave this quaint house without sampling David's superb, tasty and inventive dinners! This is a quaint house and full of interesting curiosties which we loved. True it can be cold inside if the weather is such but come prepared and enjoy. The private beach adjacent to the property must be visited, walked and enjoyed. The birdlife abounds here . Thank you again David .. we do hope to return1

“Charming but chilly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

Warned about the cold by a recent TripAdvisor review, we arrived at Tyrella House with thermal underwear and cashmere sweaters. Not much good. A few plug-in heaters and two logs flickering weakly at one end of a vast fireplace made almost no impact on this glacial Georgian house. A well cooked dinner served in an icy dining room failed to lift our spirits. Nothing for it but to dive into bed - thank goodness for the electric blanket - and hatch a plan to cut our visit short.

But in the morning, with the sun shining, both the house and its owner David Corbett began to exert their charm. So we stayed a second night and enjoyed Tyrella more - taking time to admire its elegant proportions instead of sighing at its cotton wool window insulation and piles of ancient, faded magazines. We walked on the beach, took the car ferry from Strangford over to Portaferry, bought wine from James Nicholson in Crossgar (one of the most exciting wine shops in Ireland) and had a terrifically tasty lunch in tiny Picnic in Killyleagh.

So, a lovely weekend in the end. We'd almost forgotten that the houses of Hidden Ireland (of which Tyrella is a member) are never less than interesting - and worthy of support.
