This review is simply meant to provide advice for other potential guests expecting a 5* hotel.
The good points: the hotel couldn't be in a better location for a short city break. It is a 10-15 min walk to the furthest of the good pubs/clubs/restaurants with many more right on the doorstep. The staff were very polite and helpful, with particular mention going to the barman in the piano bar who provided the best customer service that I have ever experienced from bar staff. The causerie restaurant provides delicious simple food cooked exceptionally well for very reasonable prices (a rarity in this type of hotel).
Now the bad points: the biggest issue both my girlfriend and I had with the room was the translucent glass door to the en suite which faces directly into the room. This leaves little to the imagination (sight and sound) and unless you have an unhealthy interest in your partners toilet activities be prepared for the inevitable awkwardness when nature calls.
The room was also extremely small for what claims to be a 5* hotel. And before I get a response from the manager suggesting that "if I require more space I should have booked a suite", let me point out that even a basic room in most hotels of this standard are a lot larger (I know as I have stayed in several quite recently).
The final advice I would give is to make sure that you include breakfast in your booking unless you want to pay £16pp on the day. We were provided with a special half price voucher but this is still quite steep when all my girlfriend wanted was a bowl of cereal and a cup of tea. That said, I made good use of the buffet breakfast which was worth the money,
