“NOT a great wedding venue”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2011

I have stayed here and I have eaten here - when it's good it can be very good so it was a logical place to consider when I was looking to get married.

Unfortunately it started to fly downhill in my estimation when I visited with my fiancee - now wife.

We are demanding guests - terrible people it would seem as we wanted some truly unreasonable things.

We wanted:

1 Hot food for our guests (as opposed to luke warm or getting cold)
2 We wanted the plates to be hot to keep the food warm
3 We asked for enough serving staff to ensure that the food was served at roughly the same time so one table wasn't starting their first course while another was finishing main.
4 We asked for experienced pro's to serve, not 16 year old spotty herberts with poor food hygeine that don't know one end of a fork from another.

All of the above were seen as unreasonable and the hotel refused point blank to guarantee them.

There was also the price - laughingly similar to the 4 star character hotel in Swansea.

BUT unlike that hotel whose every room is as near pristine and clean as you can get, Norton House has some serious refurbishment to undertake.

They have started and these rooms are really nice (fantastic job actually) but the non refurbished ones are really nasty.

They were immoveable on price - even when considering the rooms we couldn't give to our relatives or freinds.

It became very clear that they didn't want to deal with us as we came near to the end of the meeting.

In follow-on phone calls it was even more obvious that we were too much trouble (wanting our wedding to be perfect and all) so we decided not to use them.

I have just re-read the above and I think it makes me look like a skinflint - trying to get a discount. Well I am a bit of one but I don't mind paying if I get VALUE for my £££s

The wedding venue we used was not inexpensive but the value was there. We had a sit down 4 course gourmet meal for 77, a live band, a solo singer, a disco, a video games room, a scalextric room, an old fashioned sweetie bar - we even had a 10 minute jet fighter aerobatic display over the bay (though we organised that and I only mention so as not to look like a skinflint and also because it was just soooooooooooooooooo cool).
The wedding was just fab in the end and the other hotel catered for our guests superbly well - and did guarantee and write into the contract everything that we wanted.

So my advice?

Eat here - and if it's a good day the food will be great as will the service.

If it's a bad day both will be OK (ish).

Ask for a newly refurbished room and you will not feel fleeced - get an old one and you will.

In my grading I have graded for the average of what I have experienced on a number of visits.

In my opinion Norton House will get there but it is not there yet - particularly with such strong competition from the likes of Morgans just up the road.

And now dear reader - it's over to you.

“First class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2011

A letter we just sent the owner.

"Hello,

We visited your hotel for dinner on Monday evening at 6pm. We had not reserved a table in advance. The recommendation came from the owner of the Tides Reach B&B.

We have to say based on past experiences, particularly in Welsh hotels (sorry, but true) of a similar star rating we entered the front door with low expectations but it was a wet night and the hotel was handy.

We entered to a warm, well lit, attractive area to be met politely by a lady with blond hair who made immediate eye contact and was receptive to our request for a dinner table. A great start.

The dining room was amazing – equal to those in any 5* hotel we have stayed.
The drinks were served very swiftly by a pleasant young man and the wine was both very nice as well as suitably chilled. Impressive.

Our food order was taken efficiently. The food arrived in good time and was ..................sensational.

By 7pm the restaurant was full and we watched the staff work well, but special mention has to be made of the blond lady in charge – she was amazingly efficient.......the best we have ever seen in a restaurant.

When we left the same young man who served the drinks was there and he made eye contact and thanked us for visiting.

Service and quality like this is so rare we wanted to let you know and to say thanks to all concerned, including the chef who produced truly lovely food and plenty of it.

If we were to be picky, we’d say you don’t blow your own trumpet enough! Trip Advisor (we use all the time) does you a disservice and you as the proprietor might want to comment on others past comments. We meet other travellers all the time who use TA for guidance.

Many thanks"

“Lovely hotel”

We read mixed reviews of this hotel, but found it to be wonderful. The staff was friendly and helpful; the room was spotless and beautiful. Norton House is situated in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance of Mumbles. The breakfast was wonderful and included the most wonderful black pudding and laverbread (upon request). We would definitely stay here again.

“Charming hotel in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2011

Recently stayed here while on business in Swansea. Fantastic looking building and has the potential to be 5*. Room was clean and tidy and felt very at home. Appears if new owners have taken over and are in the process of a revamp, which I feel it needs in some areas.

Good luck, look forward to staying again with some improvements since first visit.

“Could be lovely but needs some TLC”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2011

We stayed at the hotel to celebrate a friends birthday and on first impressions were taken with the beautiful building. As soon as we stepped out of the car i noticed that the exterior was untidy. The gardens needed weeding, leaves needed collecting and an old black bag that had clearly been there for some time was lying in the garden. By the front door lay a small plastic stacker box used to collect cigarette buts!! Most off putting!! The rooms were tired and furnishing dated and chipped . Breakfast was good and waiting staff pleasant. I hear that a refurbishment is ongoing and i hope it is carried out as it is a beautiful building with real potential. I would not currently recommend this hotel.
