“Food Great but accommodation a let down”

After much to long we eventually decided to try the Foxhunter - we have experienced The Hardwick, The Crown at Whitebrook and The Walnut teee in the past year and thought it about time we tried the lesser known Foxhunter after being recommended by a friend. The food was faultless and the atmosphere relaxed and friendy. Our gripe is with the expensive and not so great value accommodation. The building itself was clean if a little tired but there was not enough hot water for both of us to have a bath before going out or again in the morning - about half a bath full was all that there was of hot water! The do-it-yourself breakfast was not a problem but there was only stale muesli and 4 slices of bacon and 6 eggs. No fruit/yoghurt and the bread was nasty presliced in a plastic bag and to topit all the carton organge juice had already been opened and part consumed- Ugh! With such a lot of lovely local produce available our last impression was a hasty bacon butty and a quick drive home for aproper bath.

“Great Food, Great Night.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

First Impressions.
The Restaurant is located about 7 miles from the town of Abergavenny in a little village called Nantyderry. This is a stunning rural setting and here you can relax in the peaceful and tranquil surroundings of the Usk Valley.
The Foxhunter is an old rural pub with a very modern and warm interior.
On arrival my friends and I were greeted by a very polite young lady and shown to our table. We sampled a home made aperitif that was very tasty whilst we browsed the Menu. The restaurant was very busy and the atmosphere was vibrant. The young girl who waited our table knew the menu well and was very informative when questioned.

Service.
The service was outstanding throughout the evening. All the staff were polite, helpful and very friendly. The elderly gentleman who explained some of the wines was informative and funny. He reminded me of a retired army major and I think he could tell a funny story or two. He was a bit of a character.

The Food.
The menu was simple however, the variety outstanding. To start I tried the Lamb sweetbreads with celeriac & apple remoulade. A very tasty dish, well presented. This was something different from the normal starters you get at most restaurants and as a butcher who appreciates the different cuts, it was cooked to perfection. Other dishes we tried were Soy shoulder of pork, gem lettuce & pickles, Grilled squid, chermoula & cous cous & Scallops with mushrooms & ham. For main course I had the Partridge with watercress, choucroute & game crouton. A very tasty dish well cooked with a delicious flavour. Other dishes we tried were Calf’s liver with Jersey cream mash, Longhorn Sirloin with roast potatoes and Hake with a herb crust. Everyone at the table commented that they would have eaten each others dish as they all looked delicious. Finally for desert I sampled the Tisen Lapp with roasted figs. This was delicious, the sponge was light and tasty as it should be, and the roasted figs were delicious. Other deserts we tried were Apple & Blackberry cobbler, Almond cake with berries and the cheeses. All the dishes were cooked to perfection and very well presented. We all had a wonderful evening at The Foxhunter and did not stop talking about our meal all evening.

The Verdict.
The food was first class the service was outstanding and the atmosphere in the Restaurant was superb. My friends and I had a great evening and to finish it off Matt Tebutt walked around the restaurant after a busy nights service talking to the diners. This made the evening for my friends and what a top bloke, he sat at our table for 10 minutes and had a chat with everyone.

Service- 10/10
The Food- 10/10
The Verdict- 10/10
The Bill- -£200. Drinks for 4, 2 bottles of wine, 3 courses for everyone and coffee.
Would I recommend? – Yes.

“Food forgettable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

Stables accom OK if a little characterless/ £145 for one night, a lot when you make tour own breakfast! Unfortunately, despite initially friendly service, the meal taken in a full (bank holiday) dining room was rushed and perfunctory. The main course (pork with radicchio and herb mash was tastelss, but for the drowned-in-balsamic inedible radicchio. The coffee was bitter. An (expensive-£260) one night stay.

“Delightful accomodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2010

Stayed one night at the Old Stables. Ok it is not huge but perfect for a couple- tastefully decorated and with everything you could want. Very clean and comfortable. We were looked after by Sam who was very welcoming.
We ate in the restaurant. It was quiet so a little lacking in atmposhere but the food was excellent. Would not hesitate to recommend.

“Lots of room for improvement”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2008

We've stayed in lots of self catering accommodation for various weekends and weeks away and the Foxhunter rates as one of the worst. For starters, the cottage was much too small, particularly the living room which was extremely pokey and claustrophobic with two tiny arm chairs. It would have been nice to sprawl out with the papers but that was never going to be an option.

There was some interesting wiring too - whenever you switched the upstairs toilet light on it would switch the lights in the downstairs living room off!

Secondly, the cottage wasn't very clean - lots of cobwebs and dust - never very nice. Personally, I also thought the food was a disappointment - fine but not outstanding.

All in all, very expensive for what it is. I wouldn't recommend it to my friends.
