I stayed with a colleague at the Lenchford Inn for 1 night with an evening meal and breakfast. I stayed in room number 6, which is a very spacious room with en suite. However, it was like stepping into a time warp. The decor is a throwback to the 1970s and is mismatched. The bathroom is dingy and a peach and green monstrosity. I opened the top drawer of the bedside table and was astounded at what met my eyes.....a 38DD bra and a pair of unwashed knickers! On further inspection of the room, I could see spider egg cases in the curtains and dirty window sills. The room had obviously not been cleaned thoroughly enough since the last occupants. It made me worry that the bed sheets had also not been cleaned...
Wanting to take a hot soak to wash off mud from a hard day's work in the field, I started to run a bath. Frustratingly, the water was intermittent and freezing cold (this did not improve the next morning and was the same in my colleagues room - No. 4). I would have rang for assistance from the room, however no phone is provided. This makes life a little difficult if you require room service and do not want to go wandering around the hotel in the evening.
The room has about 5 sets of windows, not including a large set of patio doors onto which is a lovely view onto the riverbank. The older windows are not double glazed and I was frozen during the night due to the draught coming in.
The evening meal was average in quality. I ordered fish and chips, which was very expensive for what it was. Indeed, the whole menu is over priced for a country public house. Myself and my colleague could not help notice the restaurant area was empty both at dinner and at breakfast and it is understandable why this establishment is lacking in custom. One side of the batter was not properly cooked and was soggy on the inside. Breakfast was, quite frankly, a rip-off. At a flat rate of 8.95, ordering just 2 sausages and 2 pieces of toast feels like I did not get my money's worth.
The proprietors are cheerful enough, if a little unprofessionally attired. Overall, I think The Lenchford Inn could benefit from another stint on The Hotel Inspector or a begging letter to Mary Portas for a complete overhaul in decor, menu and generally bringing this establishment into the 21st century.
