“Vastly improved under new management”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2011

My husband and I were in Avebury for the day on Sat 21 May 2011. We had heard the Red Lion was under new management, so decided to give it another try for lunch. We had been there a few years ago, and can totally echo the disastrous experiences of other reviewers, so we didn't know what to expect this time, but hoped for the best.

We observed the meals being carried out, which looked encouraging. Our table was clean, and the bustling staff seemed efficient and friendly. The menu, I have to say, was very enticing and the prices were competitive.

It was a busy lunchtime, so we waited about 25 mins for our food, but it was worth the wait, as it was freshly cooked and the presentation couldn't be faulted. I had the mini fishcakes (a starter) which were attractively arranged on a bed of assorted fresh salad greens, garnished with different sauces. I asked for bread and butter, which arrived promptly and was very fresh. My husband had gammon steak with fried eggs, peas and chips, which he enjoyed.

On looking around, it was obvious the place was much much cleaner than it had been in the past, and our own table was clean too. I paid a visit to the Ladies, which was adequately clean, although some work still needs to be done, and I presume the same is true of the Gents, although nothing like the horror stories and personal observations from before.

I actually had a word with the new manager when I asked him for a copy of the menu to take home with us, because I think praise where it's due is important, and he said he had only taken over the Lion six months ago. I know it takes time and money to get things shipshape, expecially when it was so run down in the first place, so I am confident that in time the Red Lion will be known for all the right reasons, instead of being known as one of the worst places in the UK to stay or eat, as it used to be.

Based on the lunch we had, and the service we received, I have been happy to recommend the food at the Red Lion to my friends.

“Shambolic service, find somewhere else”

Time from order to arrival of food for 3 people's meal - random. No consistency of what would arrive when. Dishes missed off, and for others in our party entire courses missed. Egregious lack of apology for poor service. Disgraceful toilets. Sticky, dirty table. Truly a place to avoid. It clearly relies on being in a sought after tourist location, knowing that it will only get any set of customers once. Tragic waste of an opportunity.

“It's getting better, don't give up”

After years of regular visiting Avebury, we've seen the good and the bad, Definate improvement since change of management this summer 2010. The Red Lion gets a lot of bad press but you can't beat the location. The current staff are great and the food is up to expectation for pub meals - in fact, on occasion excels (but depends who is on duty in the kitchen). Hang on in there, enjoy the atmosphere!
