I've just returned from spending two nights at Barnacle Hall and I suppose my comment would be 'wow'! The house is spectacular if you like your historic buildings, rather than the bland hotel chains, and you feel as though you are being wrapped in its arms once you are inside. The oak beams and polished wood, combined with the lovely old furniture, give the place a wonderfully solid protective feeling.
Rose is an excellent host, both nights I was there I didn't return until gone 11.00pm and she was still up and welcomed me with a smile when I got back, very cheering after a bit of a drive through rather damp, foggy countryside. As previous reviewers have said, the full English breakfasts are excellent - the bacon and sausages particularly stand out. Although there is a choice of a lighter breakfast if you can't face the 'full English' first thing.
I was staying whilst visiting my son at University and he came back with me one afternoon for a couple of hours. Rose didn't hesitate to welcome him and her husband had set to and lit the log burner in the comfortable sitting room so we could sit and toast our toes before heading out for the evening, it was quite a struggle to tear ourselves away from the fire!
Despite the age of the building, I think most of it dates from the mid 16th century, it wasn't draughty, the heating was always on and the rooms were cosy.
I think I could have fitted the whole of the ground floor of my house in the bedroom! Not only was there a large double bed but there were two comfortable arm chairs as well so if I had wanted I could have sat in my room and watched the TV without having to sit on the bed.
It would be lovely to return in the summer when the garden is in full bloom. It is obviously tended with love and I should imagine sitting in it with a cup of tea would be extremely relaxing.
So, if you are visiting the Coventry area, don't hesitate to stay at Barnacle Hall, I'm sure your first word will be 'wow' as well!
