“Basic but clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Arrived late and was shown to my room by what seemed to be the night porter. He explained where everything was and I found everything to be clean and tidy. The en suite was again, basic but fine. The lock on the door was a bit dodgy getting it unlocked to enter, but after getting help again to get in, I managed to master it myself. My room was right next to the main road so was a bit concerned about noise, but I slept fine both nights.
Breakfast seemed basic but fine, and from what I remember it was help yourself to cornflakes/branflakes but got cooked breakfast if asked.
Nice people when I asked for directions and it was my kind of basic, clean stay.

“Worst place I've ever stayed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2009

Stayed in the Lynwood on a recent trip to Newcastle (lads weekend away) and I wasn't expecting much for the price. Just a clean room to come back to to sleep off the booze would have been sufficient. This was the case, however I'd recommend everyone saves themself some cash and book into one of the hostels, as this place is along the same lines.

My room was, in all seriousness, about 2 metres long and a metre wide. It was that small. It also didn't have a toilet, meaning any calls of nature had to be answered with a lengthy trek to the communal toilets, which depending where in the "hotel" your room was, could be down several flights of stairs.

My room did have a sink, but I dread to think how many people have decided against the long walk and relieved themselves into it over the years.

The heating was on CONSTANTLY and couldn't be turned off. This, coupled with a radiator right at the bottom of the bed meant it was pretty uncomfortable the whole time.

The rooms on the upper floor were unsuitable for anyone taller than about 5', as they were loft conversions and there beems pertruding at ridiculous angles. You had to keep your wits about you the whole time, as one lapse in concentration could result in a stubbed toe or bruised head.

Was only there for a weekend, but when I came to take a shower (communal, again) they weren't working. I found this to be pretty disgusting, but there wasn't anyone around to report the problem to. In the end I just gave up.

Hotel was also advertised as being within Walking Distance of the city centre's bars and clubs. In reality it was about a mile and a half up a fairly steep hill, so bear this in mind aswell.

All in all, it was a real hole. If I was going back to Newcastle, I'd either go for similar conditions in the much cheaper hostels, or fork out a bit more and go in a Traellodge or similar. Stay here at your peril!

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. It's a shame that nothing was said at the time of your stay, that would have given us an opportunity to assist you.
Generally speaking we would not have the heating on constant as it does not make economic sense. Should the room be too warm, they all have windows which can be opened quite wide and the radiators can be turned off or down.
The rooms all vary in size and 50% are en-suite. I would be horrified to think that guests in the standard rooms would even consider not using the correct toilet facilities no matter how inebriated they are.
Most of our guests enjoy their time with us and we do have a lot of repeat trade. We are within 1mile of the city centre but I do accept that coming back from town is up a steep hill. We are on a good bus route or a taxi would cost approx £6.
We are registered and inspected by the Tourist Board and your generalisation that it is "a hole " is derogatory and unfounded. We would not be able to retain our grading if this were true.
We are known for offering value for money without compromising our standards.
