“Nice staff, dungeon like room, lumpy bed, no shower, strange smell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Asked for a nice room on the basis of tripadvisor reviews. I was given room 117 on the ground floor. On entering the room I noticed it was dingey and there was a strange smell from the bathroom. The chair was stained from something awful and the whole room felt grubby. There is an odd sort of miniature wardrobe which i needed to bend down into. The bathroom was pretty miserable and it was probably clean but felt like it was dirty. The shower didnt work as the connection to it from the tap kept dropping down activating the bath taps instead. The bed was awful, I felt every spring. The breakfast was pretty poor with very little choice unless you want a cooked breakfast. The only redeeming feature was that the staff were very pleasant. I had a lamb shank in the (freezing cold) restaurant which was very tasty indeed. However, I wouldnt recommend. From my discussion with the staff it would seem that they know of the tripadvisor reviews but it doesnt seem to have resulted in any improvements.

Room Tip: Check it out before you accept it. It seems like they are all the same though

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review.

I am pleased to read that you enjoyed the food in the restaurant and the team in the restaurant made you feel welcome.

I am sorry your found the restaurant to be cold, we had an issue with a heating boielr for a short period but had hired other heating appliances to try to minimise any discomfort.

With regards the bedrooms we regulalry check the rooms with our internal maintenace project.

We are aware of the areas that are in need of attention and certainly our bathrooms are on top of this list.

Regards

Adam Brough

“Good with a few niggles”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

My wife and myself stayed here friday 27th until Sunday 29th January. Nice big car park no problems parking. Good check inn very quick and efficient Room clean, good bed and shower room. Went down for a meal and due to an event was asked to eat in the conservatory this would have been fine if it had been better heated far to cold. The meal was well cooked and enjoyed.
All staff that we met were very polite and helpful and that was nice. Breakfast was outstanding very good choice well laid out tasty food and as much as you wanted. Friday night was good no problems Saturday night was very noisy with several people seemingly walking around shouting and slamming doors. This is unacceptable and I strongly feel that a noise policy should be enforced for the comfort of all guests. This was the only complaint in which otherwise was a suprisingly good stay and not what was expected in a hotel of this type.
Bury st Edmonds is a fantastic market town and well worth a visit, it is a pleasant 20 minute walk into town through the lovely abbey gardens very enjoyable even on a cold January day.
This hotel would have got top marks if it had not been for the continual disturbances on Saturday night. Overell very good.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review

It is always pleasing to read a positive review.

I appologise for any inconvenience the noise levels caused you during your stay.

My night managers have been re- briefed on how to deal with noisey guests.

“Not very nice at all - just don't”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Room was small, strange smell comming from the bathroom - probably from the plug holes.

Old fittings that need replacing, really slow tv. Poor lighting. Cold room.

Tried the shower and gave up within seconds, really really poor flow, it just drizzles between boiling hot and freezing cold.

In the morning walked in to have breakfast and just stood there waiting to be tended too but staff just seemed to ignore me even though there is a big sign to say wait to be seated. Looked and what was to offer in breakfast and found the coffe machine out of order and very greasy looking food.

The only plus point seems to be free wi fi but this is put down by thefact that it keeps dropping out of 5 minutes at a time.

Needless to say it has been added to my companies "we don't stay at this hotel" list.

Room Tip: "I don't think there are any good rooms"

“Find somewhere else to stay, even if you have to pay more”

The room was tired and very cramped, service was so-so and basic hotel facilities unavailable. And the local beer - Greene King - was "off". If Bury St Edmunds had a Travelodge, this hotel would really struggle. Even at an online booking discount, it's just not worth the money.
