“Santa Surprise!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

Just back from a 3 night stay at The Wessex in Street Sommerset, we booked a Santa Special with Leisuretime 24th - 27th December 2011.
I would mark the holiday overall 7 out of 10 which was a lot higher than I anticipated having not been on a trip like this before.
The staff and chummy fellow guests get a 9, the hotel and our room 7 (for a small extra charge we could have up-graded to a jucuzzi suite but our room was just fine), the food 6 (some meals were a lot better than others, but I suppose I am fussy when it comes to food and like my veg cooked the way I like which would probably be too undercooked for some), but the evening entertainers only 5, one night we had a pianist who knew his stuff, but it's a shame there wasn't a comedian/volcalist or similar.
The hotel has just been appointed a new manageress who was excellent, everyone was made to feel welcome and accomodated, the staff were excellent. I've never played bingo before but joined in one afternoon, having the numbers called out in a Rommanian accent was hilarious expecially when the caller got the rhyming slang wrong and knew it herself and made a joke of it, but it was all part of the fun!!

The hotel is only about a mile away from Glastonbury ( which we visited on Boxing Day morning a truly facinating place) and across the road from the Clarks Village, with lovely local pubs closeby, so something for most.

The Manageress said there are big plans for a hotel refurbishment in 2013 which is great, I hope the genuine friendliness isn't lost though which can happen. We would have no problems at all spending another break at the Wessex, and feel the Santa Special trips run by Leisure time are, based on our experience and other family members who have now gone on a few over the last few years, great value for money, would recommend to anyone wanting a good fun time but not fancy and a la carte!

One other thing I would mention, in my opinion I would not say this trip was suitable for children, unless they were travelling in a party with other children, they may be bored.

Room Tip: We found the rooms quite warm and needed the window open at night, our room faced the main road whic...

Many thanks for your lovelly comments they are greatly appreciated , of which i have passed onto all of the staff. I too had never heard Bingo in Rommanian, but as you said it was hilarious and added to the whole christmas experience of fun of which everyone had from regular guests to first timers and including the staff old and new.
My aim as the new manager at The Wessex Hotel is to bring a warm friendly and fun experience for all our guests but with all the professional standards you would expect and deserve while staying with us, we wish to make all guests feel relaxed, pampered and spoilt from the minute they enter the hotel to the time they leave by giving great service, excellent food from cream teas, bar snacks to Al a Carte menus, Luxurious bedrooms and Comfortable areas to have a quite drink or just to sit and read a book.
We very much look forward to welcoming you again in the near future all the best for 2012

“Wessex Hotel, Street - NEVER AGAIN”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

I booked my wife and daughter into the Wessex Hotel for short break. The “superior” twin room looked, on the website, to be exactly what we needed. Unfortunately, the décor was “tired”, with broken blinds and light switches, emergency lighting in the corridor had failed and not been repaired. Reception staff did not have the authorisation to offer a suitable alternative room in a reasonable timescale. My wife found alternative accommodation nearby but was denied a refund from the Wessex Hotel. Letters and emails to the hotel group have been ignored for many weeks. This is an example of a hotel which is happy to take your money but unwilling to provide the service that you have paid for. We will never be tempted to stay at the Wessex Hotel, Street or its sister hotel, the Durrant House Hotel, Bideford again.

Room Tip: Always ask to see your room BEFORE handing over any money.

As the new general manager from december 2011 i was saddened to see from your review that you had an unpleasant short stay in august 2011,and i am even more frustrated that the then staff did not deal with your party adequetly and efficently A refurbishment programe of the bedrooms has now been completed to add to our guests comfort. Retraining of all staff in all departments have now been carried out also.
I understand your comments fully and hope one day you will reconsider and try one of our hotels again as they both have alot to offer.

Thank you very much for your lovelly comments .

We are currently looking into a refurbishment programme for the hotel frontage and guest areas inside the hotel, our aim is to add to our guests ( old and new ) experience from the moment they arrive to their departure. We hope you will join us again in the very near future so you can experience the on going changes that are happening here with the new management team which are now in place.

Thank you for your comments on your stay at The Wessex Hotel in nov for the jazz festival.
I have just completed my first Sunday jazz night January 29th 2012 as the new Manager at the hotel with the famous Wessex New Orleans jazz band and Spats Langham, all had a fantastic night and said how things had greatly improved from the food to the service and comfort of the bedrooms.
I am sorry you were possibly misinformed by the staff regarding single rooms for the Nov Jazz 2012, we do single occupancy rooms for our jazz festivals and sunday night jazz specials but do only have limited availablity. I would be more than happy if you wanted to contact me directly so i can check availablity for you.

“Fails to achieve its potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011
2
people found this review helpful

This is a medium-sized, 70's (?), budget hotel at one end of the main street of Street. It has clearly had quite a bit of refurbishment over the last year or two and much of the decor is reasonable or better. There is, for example, a brand new lift. However, there are too many failings for it to be recommended without qualification. My wife and I attended a jazz weekend there and our room, though basically well presented and with separate, newly-tiled toilet and bathroom, afforded the following defect list: one of the over-bed lights was faulty (not just a missing bulb), the electrical socket supplying the TV was loose in the wall, the TV remote didn't work, the table lamp on the desk could not be used without moving the desk because the cord wouldn't reach a socket, the bed comprised an exceptionally firm, standard-size mattress on its predecessor's king-size base, the wallpaper on one wall was lifting at the joints, the laminate surface on the (far-from-new) chest of drawers was lifting along one edge, the (almost new) shower curtain rail was starting to come loose, and there were cobwebs over the bed and behind the bathroom door. Most of these could be rectified by a competent handyman within an hour at minimal cost; only the bed requires money spending. On the plus side, our heating wasn't working when we arrived because the radiator needed bleeding; this was quickly rectified - and followed up with a check the following day! I'm not in a good position to comment on the food as we ate en masse from a special, limited menu. The breakfasts were good with all the usual options available. Our evening meals varied from the good (chicken in a white wine sauce) via the ordinary (pork, turkey) to the atrocious (anorexic plaice fillets completely lost in breadcrumbs). The vegetables were mostly good, the exception being the sprouts on our last night which were reminiscent of the overcooked school dinners of my youth. One serious failure as far as I am concerned is that gravy was gravy - described as "rich" but identical for pork, beef and turkey and with no recognisable trace of meat juices. Staff were generally friendly and helpful though there were occasional misunderstandings with one or two of those of Eastern European origin - such as my cooked breakfast arriving before I had had my cereal. We might well attend the equivalent jazz weekend next year but will stay in one of the other two hotels within walking distance.

Room Tip: Inspect it before accepting it.
