“Overall, very nice. The staff are the key asset.”
We booked this hotel using our Buy a Gift voucher. Unfortunately, I had forgotton to take the voucher with us, which we were asked for when we checked in. I explained the error to the receptionist (Kamila) who was lovely. She called the Reservations Manager to confirm we would be alright to forward it on when we returned home and once this had been agreed, she reassured us it wouldn't be a problem. After completing the check in process Kamila's parting words to us were to not worry about the voucher any more, and to simply enjoy our stay - It was a really nice touch.
We were given the option to upgrade our room, which we declined, as we were on a tight budget. It seemed the main benefits to the upgrade were a robe & slippers, which we didn't think would justify the £25 per night cost. Having said that, we were really pleased with our standard room, and were happy with our decision not to upgrade. The room was a very good size and clean. The bathroom was spotless and the shower was really good (which I was vey happy with).
We found getting about to be relatively easy. The bus from town stops on the main road right outside the hotel, however if you have any mobility issues, you may find it difficult to use the bus, as there is a rather steep hill to climb from the main road to the hotel.
We ate in the hotel for breakfast as well as once for dinner. Breakfast was good, with a nice selection availalbe. Dinner was nice, although I wouldn't have eaten there twice if I'm honest. I had the antipasti as my starter which was disappointing. I had a few olives which had been taken from a jar, two slices of parma ham and four small (10 pence piece) slices of chorizo. The "warm bread" turned out to be two cold bread rolls, which were the same as those my other half had got with his soup! Comparing what I got, to how it was described, I'm not sure it was worth the money. My Butternut Squash in the risoto I ordered was also undercooked. I didn't send it back, as I didn't want to be eating my meal after my other half had finished his. I had to eat the risoto around it.
Overall, the hotel is nice, but I think you get what you pay for in terms of the more expensive competitors in town. The bus is £4.20 return and the cabs from Bailbrook into town are around £7-£10 each way, so bearing in mind how long you're staying, you may do better to pay a bit more and get a hotel which is more central, and therefore cheaper to get about.
By far the biggest asset to this hotel is their staff. Yes, they do have a lot of staff for whom English is not their first language, but we didn't once have any trouble understanding them, and their English is by far and away better than my ability to speak their language!! They are polite and SO helpful. We found that their motto was "If you need anything, dial 0 for reception and we'll help you". I'm not sure if they have many staff, as the ladies who checked us in on the Wednesday, also seated us for breakfast on Thursday, but I thought this was a nice touch, as they recognised you and were able to continue with the rapport we had built the day before.
