I booked here during a surprise birthday weekend for my wife with high expectations after reading other reviews on TA. However, it wasn't quite what we expected.
The food varied from ordinary to perfect. The pheasant and venison were dry and the standard "side of veg" was the same regardless of which main you ordered. However, the lamb and deserts were just right and the Montrachet was a nice find on the wine list.
The service again was variable, with a slightly nervous opening from one of the staff who seemed to relax and become more welcoming as the night went on. Other staff fell over themselves to serve us which was appreciated but meant we were offered everything twice.
Would I go again? Absolutely. But I'd go because the staff were honest, friendly and worked hard rather than formal and highly trained. And the food was well priced, hearty and plentiful rather than the ultimate in fine dining.
All things considered, a wonderful night in a surprising way, although next time it would be nice if the waitress would pour our wine and remember which of us ordered which dish. There were only two of us after all.

Dear Stuart J Thank you for your balanced review & good comments Im sorry some aspects were disappointing firstly apologies if your Venison & pheasant dish was dry I do cook them to order so do not know why, I would always be happy to cook another. Re the vegetables we do not employ any chefs it is just my wife & myself, with myself preparing all the canapes, starters & main courses including the vegetables I feel they are a very important part of a meal but working on my own I do not have the time to prepare & serve different choices with each dish therefore we give a panache of at least seven items to each customer included in the price also each main course choice has a different garnish. We don't pretend to be the ultimate in fine dining . I think you described us perfectly, friendly ,honest & hard working not formal, that does not necessarily mean un- trained. If we did pour all customers wines your lovely bottle of Puligny Montrachet would cost you at least £ 20.00/ £30.00 more as in those "ultimate fine dining restaurants" We manage to keep our prices competitive by not employing Sommeliers etc which ramp up the costs that we have to pass on to our customers. You are obviously a person who likes good food & wine & hope you will revisit us again. Eric & Beb chef owners.
