The Sofitel St James in London is in an ideal location, within walking distance of several attractions (such as the Royal Academy, Trafalgar Square), shopping (Bond Street) and underground stations (Green Park, Piccadilly Circus, Charing Cross). Despite the central location the hotel is very quiet and serene.
When you first walk into the lobby you realize this is a sophisticated hotel - the layout and furnishings are very elegant. This initial impression is confirmed by the staff - highly professional, courteous and obviously interested and eager to make my stay comfortable and enjoyable. Coming from the US where customer service has become an insincere scripted formality, it was a delight to interact with the hotel staff here.
My suite was extremely well appointed and comfortable complete with separate sitting room, powder room, full bathroom and bedroom. The espresso machine was an unexpected and very welcome surprise.
There was no view of note from my room but in central London, unless you're staying in a tower block, it's very unlikely you'll find a room with a dramatic view.
Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to use the hotel spa, restaurants or bar but from what I saw they were busy and obviously popular.
Next time I travel to London I intend to return to the Sofitel St James. The only change I would make would be to stay longer.
