“A Real dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2007

We didn't even stay it was that bad, we paid a deposit in good faith expecting the guest house to be clean and comfortable. When we pulled up most of the houses in the street were empty or boarded up, the guest looked really grubby and curtains were hanging off their curtain poles. There were two scrap cars in the drive under covers and the back garden was full of rubbish. We were showed two horrible rooms and the place stunk of grease and fat. I can only think that the other residents were homeless people. We did not feel safe staying in the guest house and just returned home instead. We were in shock all the way home.......

It is hard to respond to this
review in light of the many untruths but we will do our best. Firstly,
we regard our guesthouse as being very comfortable, clean and good
value for money. It certainly does not smell of grease and fat, in
fact we do not even own a deep fat fryer! As to the other houses in
the street, we have no control over them, except to say that our
neighbours are extremely houseproud and have spent a lot of money in
restoring their properties. There is only one house in the road that
is empty and in a state of repair and I believe it has recently been
purchased and work is to start on it shortly. As to the guesthouse
looking grubby, admittedly we are working on the porch at present and
it has had the paint removed ready for a new coat of paint. This may
have given the impression of not being particulary clean and as for
the curtains hanging off the rods, we have yet to find them so. We do
advertise off road parking, but at present space is limited as our
"classic cars" are outside under wraps to protect the paintwork, until
the garaging which is being prepared at the rear of the property has
been completed. A space for a car was offered, but as the guests had
come with two cars we assured them that they were perfectly safe on
the road. The rear of the property, does have what may be termed
rubbish, but is in fact builders rubble from our recent renovations
and will be removed with a skip soon, though how this impacts upon a
one night's stay, within a clean and comfortable guest house we have
yet to find out.

Thank you for reading this.

“Give it a miss!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2006

Ellan Vannin Guest House, Liverpool

We stayed one night here in April, and cannot, in all honesty, recommend it to anyone, unless you are really stuck for a place to stay. The house and yard are rather run down, the room (we were in the front room downstairs) was also rather shabby, with worn bedding, very flat pillows, and rather thin drapes half hanging off their rods. It was a windy day, and the wind literally shrieked through the window frames. Fortunately, the wind dropped by bed-time, or I'm sure we would never have slept for the noise.

Breakfast was served in the room, as the dining room is apparently under renovation. With breakfast came a very long tale of woe from the owner about the unfortunate death, due to illness, of his young son some months previously. We felt badly for the guy, but this is really not the sort of stuff to inflict upon your guests. We felt very uncomfortable having to listen to all this

All in all, it was the worst stop on our three week tour of England's B&Bs. Too bad.

In response to the review, I truly apologise for the decor in the room. The whole property is being refurbished and if you care to return to our property in six month's time I am sure that you will see an improvement. The windows we have had a particular problem with as we have had large bay windows replaced with UPVC and for some reason the wind, on particular days, does blow through and make quite a noise. We are working on rectifying this. Also, can I apologise for my husband talking about our son. As you can imagine to lose a child is a tragedy and one we are coming to terms with. Each of us deals with this differently, my husband is only trying to talk about our son in order to keep him alive as he was a special child. I am sorry that this upset you. Please do not be put off by the previous review, as we are a friendly, reasonably cheap and clean accommodation offering a fantastic breakfast, albeit not in a dining room at present as we are having the ceiling renewed, which is a big job.
