Fortunately my stay was brief, just the one night as my youngest son enjoyed his stag do in this wonderful , charismatic bit of historic England.
Cathedral Gate sounded fine on the web site but it left a lot to be desired. Certainly it was quirky, unusual and in a wonderful spot for the tourist, right in the centre of the action as it were.Had my room cost around £50 for the night I would have been happy enough but £111 for the facilities on offer was excessive by anyone's standards. It was explained that renovations were impossible to this 500 year old establishment because it was owned by the Cathedral but I am certain that it does not stop them painting, decorating and plastering while my ice cold shower on a cold May day was an irritation to say the least, especially when I was told I should have jiggled the lever!!I had to get someone in to fix the television and having booked an en suite I was annoyed to have my bedroom door facing the communal bathroom and toilet which served as a constant alarm call throughout what was left of the night and morning when the students took over in the street below. View? None! Had I been there to study the fabulous Cathedral, then fine. I wasn't and therefore I wasn't impressed. Sorry!
