“Budget pretending to be luxury”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We paid £160 per night exclusive of breakfast, off season. There are so many things wrong with this hotel. But although we rate it badly we would return. For four reasons. So, the good stuff first. The location is sensational. Our room with sea view was marvellous. Parking is a nightmare in Brighton, and the hotel has its own. There is a small but adequate pool and gym. The spa treatments, separate from the pool, are excellent.

But.....it seems this is an hotel which concentrates on the corporate and doesn't care about anything else. Check in took over 20 minutes. Cheery staff did not lessen the pain. Breakfast trays visible outside the rooms as late at 7pm. Lots of extra charges. Touting green values, a bathrobe and slippers can be - erm - rented for £5 a day; parking is £20 a day, wi-fi is an eye watering £10 for 24 hours. Breakfast , advertised online at £9 is in fact £10. We had it in our room. It was poor, and the hotel tried to charge us £16.95 each plus tray charge. Our room was not cleaned well, breakfast crumbs left on the table, milk not removed, my glass not washed once during our three night stay, cracked mug, hard uncomfortable pillows. The room was incredibly hot and we could not open any windows so it was a sealed, airless box, very drying on the skin.

We were originally booked for two nights and asked to stay an extra night (a Sunday when the hotel was hardly bursting at the seams). This was quoted at £103 (or the Penthouse Suite at £275) but the next day the prices had gone up to £159 (£330 for the Penthouse). We were told the hotel changes its rates up to 5 times a day. Staff are friendly. But this hotel is obviously trying to squeeze every penny out of its guests. The restaurant is awful, poor food, expensive wine. Try Cafe Rouge, opposite the back of the hotel, or Mange Tout near the station for breakfast.

Tips for eating: Fish fishy, Moshi Moshi on Sunday and Terre a Terre, yum.

Room Tip: Definitely worth upgrading to a sea view

“Thistle Hotel”

The Hotel is in an excellent location, with easy access to the Lanes. We had our evening meal on Friday and the food was great, Breakfast overlooking the sea was great. The staff were excellent, we had problems with the heating and water over the weekend, the staff were polite, helpful, we were compensated for the problems we had experienced and would certainly recommend a visit, good value for money (especially with the discount offered). The beds were really comfortable and despite walking all day Saturday we were well rested on Sunday morning, ready to face a long trip back in the snow.

“Weekend by the sea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

The location of the hotel is fantastic, right on the sea front at the back of the Lanes
The facilities and staff at the hotel were very good too, we had 2 rooms 1 family and 1 twin, and we arranged for them together, which the staff were able to accommodate this.
We ate lunch at the hotel, and the staff were very accommodating and helpful, pizza for the kids and it was lovely! Think they could have put some complimentary nibbles on with drinks though
We used the pool/sauna/steam room - more seating around the pool would have been nice, and the ability to order some drinks would have been lovely. But it was very clean.
The car park was Ok for us as we arrived in the morning of the Saturday and there were a few spaces (park on level 2 or 4 if you can to get to the lifts).
One problem during our stay was that the hotels boiler broke down and there was reduced hot water, a note was put under our doors apologising .... it was a bitterly cold weekend and the heating was on full blast. Additional heaters were supplied to us.
These things happen. but the hotel were very apologetic and the matter was resolved.
I would definately return to this hotel.

“Sunday lunch for £10 - good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

The Thistle has a good location right on the seafront quite close to the pier; The dining room is at first floor level (with lift access if you need it) and offers good views over the sea.
The Sunday lunch is based on starters and carvery main course for £9.95, and desserts for an additional £4. I thought all courses were good although my wife was not too convinced by the roast potatoes.
House wine is fine so in summary a good lunch at a low price - well worth a visit.
NB: the restaurant is south facing so in summer a window table might prove to be a bit warm....

“Great central hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Stayed here on a Sat night as part of a Groupon deal. Really worth the money. The location is fantastic right on the front with views overlooking the pier. Staff very friendly especially Ken the concierge gentleman. Car park is a bit of a nightmare. We were queing for aboujt half an hour just to get in it. Was very glad to get in the car park though as Brighton is a nightmare for parking.
Breakfast was lovely, lots of choice and attentive staff. Beds very comfortable. Bath rooms are a bit dated but overall I would recommend and would love to stay again if the price was right.

Dear Guest

Thank you for posting a review on Tripadvisor.

I'm pleased to read that you'd enjoyed your stay and thanks for highlighting the friendly service that you'd received from Ken, our Head of Concierge.

The car parks in Brighton do get full particularly at weekends. We do have a priority entrance into the council car park at the front of the hotel. As soon as any car leaves the car park our guests are able to obtain the space.

Thank you for recomending our hotel and we look forward to welcoming you back

Kind regards
