“A truly delightful country hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2011

I do not understand those earlier critical reviews. Perhaps some guests have chronic dyspepsia. In the George I got exactly what I wanted for my one night stay - a friendly welcome, comfortable bedroom, two excellent meals, in an unspoilt, cosy and comfortable old country hotel. I am partially disabled and sometimes need to ask for help - at the George I didn't need to ask because the help was freely offered.

Altogether I thoroughly enjoyed my short stay.

“Very comfortable bedrooms and great breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2010

We spent 3 nights here with our daughter in'The Suite' . Our bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in and we had the advantage of some privacy as our 11 year-old daughter was in a separate area. Breakfasts were great with a good choice of well-cooked food and the usual juices and cereals. Staff were pleasant and attentive throughout, and whilst the menu in the bar and restaurant does not change daily other than the 'Fish special', there was a good choice and 'platters' were particularly tasty. Alfriston is very picturesque and a good base for exploring both Brighton, Eastbourne and further afield - the only downside is the narrow street and lack of parking. although staff were quick to let us know the best place to park free of charge up a side street

“one of the worst evening meals out of my life”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2010

Tonight I had one of the worst meals out of my life. The service was appalling and all of my vegetables were one level above raw and several levels below al dante. When I complained I was told sorry but we are understaffed as if it was my fault. I paid my bill in full - no reduction for the appalling meal was offered - and resolved not to return. I advise anyone reading this to get better value elsewhere

“The worst roast dinner I have ever had”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

We had walked for over two hours and were looking forward to a lovely roast lunch. The plates arrived absolutely swimming in gravy (no jug?). The meat (lamb) was tasteless, as were the potatoes (old and non-crispy), veg was overcooked and then made more soggy with the soaking of gravy. Landlord was not friendly, nor looked happy to be there. Absolute waste of money and truly disappointing.

“A mediaeval inn full of character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

My wife and I stayed at The George for two nights whilst on a week's holiday in Sussex.

We can thoroughly recommend it. The inn retains its mediaeval character in the bedrooms, restaurant and bar, and public areas. There was plenty of atmosphere in the bar. The food was very good indeed - both quality and enormous portions! - and there was a selection of very well kept real ales. Alfriston is very well located to explore the south downs, with good walking from the village itself or on the nearby coast.
