“Perfect if you are taking your dog with you”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

We stayed for two nights over the weekend, the good points: Nice and friendly staff, friendly resident dogs, clean room. The bad points: Strong dog urine smell on carpets in the hallways which I could smell in my room, dog mess in the court yard, the dining room was very tired and looks nothing like the pictures that are on here, the breakfast was nice but seemed to be dumped on the plate. Maybe I have been spoilt by staying at nicer B&B's in the past but we were dissapointed with our experience and would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Avoid the room next to the kitchen at all costs.

we are sorry that you didnt enjoy your stay, but firstly to clear up a few issues , firstly you state you could smell strong dog urine from the carpet in the hallway , there is no carpet in the hallway only 200 yr old flagstones which are washed every day , secondly you state dining room is tired sorry its decorated this year , we repaint every year , you state also to avoid room near the kitchen but not why , having said in your review that the room was clean , what was problem with room near kitchen ? of course if you have dogs in a house from time to time they go to the toilet ,we try to clear as soon as we see , of course there are much better bed and breakfasts than us but we feel we give a friendly service , with clean rooms and a decent breakfast, not the Hilton but for £35 a head good value , we are allways happy to take on suggestions from our customers on how to improve the experience , but its good idea to remember that you should not judge a simple rustic b and b with a upmarket boutique hotel and as you seem to have issue with dogs to avoid b and b s that have them

“Lovely place would definately stay again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

Please ignore any negative reviews you have seen of The Bakehouse and tryt it for yourself. Malcolm and his staff made us feel so very welcome and went the extra mile to accomodate us in an accessible room. We are very grateful for the hospitality shown and cant thank them all enough for their help.

Breakfast was great and there was no pressure from staff about checking in/out etc.

Our Son loved the dogs are got very upset when we left, saying he missed them and wants to see them every day.

Nothing was ever too much trouble and we already ear marked The Bakehouse for future stays as we enjoyed the town and the place so much.

Thanks again for contributing to such a great trip. Best Wishes - Edgar family

“Quirky and comfortable if a little noisy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2011

Lovely room in the heart of Sherborne. Only possible drawback being the noise from the busy road and the Abbey clock chimes with the window open on a warm evening. Very nicely and unusually furnished with a comfortable if slightly old fashioned looking bathroom - wonderful hot water and brilliant to have a good bath after a days cycling.
Our bikes were well looked after and our hosts were very flexible about looking after them and our luggage whilst we explored Sherborne after checking out the following morning.
Breakfast freshly cooked to order in nicely informal kitchen.
Friendly dogs

thank you for your review ,and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay , wherever we can, we try to remedy any problems , we constantly look at our our rooms to see if we can improve the experience for our guests , but comments like the bells kept me awake when i left the window wide open ,are not something we can ever remedy ,the bells have been chiming here over a thousand years, i have had a quiet word with the boss but he told me not to be a silly boy he was here first and to get on with my life ,

“Friendly and warm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

We stayed at The Bakehouse for a nearby wedding for our niece. We asked our kids (17 and 19 - not easy to please) at the end of a 10-day trip to rate the places we had stayed. They rated The Bakehouse the best, because of the relaxed atmosphere. Yvett met us and helped with the luggage when we arrived. The real joy was just sitting and taking time to finish breakfast, chatting with Malcolm and a few of the other guests. Even when we needed help with something (we blew a fuse), help was immediate, and we never felt like we had put someone out - they were glad to help.

Our sister stayed at another B&B over near Yeovil, and had the opposite experience. She was kicked out early in the day so they could clean. No pressure here though.

Sherborne is a neat little town too, and was a nice walk to the grocer.

“A perfect jem”

Bit late putting this review on - but a great place - so better late than never.

If you research places properly - mostly through this website I should say - then the standard of your stay should meet or exceed your expectations.
Once again proper research has led to a gem of a find.
This place really was exceptional. We were looking for a comfortable b&b in near the abbey in Sherborne. We found a very comfortable b&b near the abbey in Sherborne.
We were staying for two nights 2nd May bank holiday
weekend.
We arrived very late Friday night - about 11pm - owner was waiting up for us as well as two very docile dogs - who did look very comfortable on the sofa! If you look at the photos on their website we had the room with the sleigh bed. Very large. Separate shower room with loo. Shower had one of those heads that emits different coloured LEDs depending on the temperature of the water. Red for hot - blue for cold. Very exciting, had read about these in the paper only a couple of weeks ago. And yes I did stand under the shower and turn it cold just to see the light turn blue!
Room was clean, well aired and warm. Nice bedding and fresh towels. Large flat screen tv and free wifi. Very useful as just got my new iPad a week before! Which incidentally I am writing this review on!!
Breakfast was anytime before 11am the next morning. The owner made it very clear that nothing was to much trouble and we should come down when we wanted to and when we were ready.
In the end did not stay in bed all morning and turned up in a very spacious breakfast come dining room at about 9:30am (had a wedding to get ready for!)
Fresh strawberries awaited us along with a very nice cooked breakfast made to order. Good selection of juices and cereals including some good muesli. Most importantly a large pot of fresh strong coffee!
On the Sunday there as no rush at all to check out. We went down to breakfast about 10:30 and then stayed in the room until about 2pm - nursing a slightly sore head.
The house has a very welcoming feel with people coming and going constantly. I would certainly recommend it and be would be more than happy to stay again.

thank you for your kind review , i agree its a pity people dont do more research before they visit , its amazing how many people dont . most of the the bad reviews we have had are usually because they dont understand what we are offering , we have two dogs who are kept away while guests are eating , its an old building so expect ill fitting doors ! we dont want to be a boutique hotel ,just watch that famous tv programme, if you are looking for this try somewhere else , other people i have found have had a bad drive here or a dispute between themselves. i once had a women who told me, my husband promised me a weekend away in a 5 star hotel and i end up here in a bed and breakfast , and its raining what sort of holiday is that ? always phone me if you want to ask questions, its better to be upfront , that way both of us win
